You finally found a company you like, you've done a great interview, the employer likes you, and they wanna make an offer! But then you realize, oh no, I still gotta do negotiation. And you think - - "What should I do if the offer amount is too low?" - "Can I ask for more?" - "If yes, how do I even bring it up?" - "What if I ask for too much… or too little?" - "What if I turn them off, and they don't want to hire me anymore?" These are all valid concerns. You can do everything well up until this point and ultimately end up with a result that you're not satisfied or happy with, depending on how well this step of the job process, called negotiation, goes. Salary negotiation is a crucial step in closing any interview. But before you dive into it, it's important to take a step back and clarify the details of the offer. One needs to understand the gross and net salary. If there is a variable component, it is of supreme importance to understand on what all factors it depends. Definitely checking on the last 3-4 years of variable payouts helps understand the dynamics better, and this overall helps negotiate the fixed v/s variable component. Make sure to clarify the insurance policies, health benefits, relocation, and leave policies being offered. Understanding what you'll be receiving for the year and how it can improve is crucial. Resources to work, such as a laptop and allowance for travel based work, are specifics to be clarified. Offer letters can be tricky, and it's easy to miss important details that were only discussed verbally. Documentation of every verbal confirmation is essential. Make sure to keep track of every penny and perk, and get aligned confirmation on your personal email, before saying yes/no.
