Our CEO, Jim Islam, spoke today at the Co-operatives UK Congress in Birmingham as part of a panel discussion aptly named "The feeling is mutual". Mutuals are good for the economy, good for workers and good for the customers they serve, yet the concept of a mutual society can be difficult to explain. The panel engaged in a lively and thought-provoking discussion on why this is and what can be done about it. #Cooperatives #MutualSociety #CoopCongress Joining Jim on the panel was: • Host, Rebecca Harvey, Executive Editor, Co-op News • Shirine Khoury-Haq, CEO, Co-op Group • Kevin Parry OBE, Society Chairman, Nationwide and Chair of Royal London • Shelagh Hancock, CEO, First Milk • Paul Dover, UK Agriculture Director, Arla Foods

Communicating #Scotland Through Food: From Devolution to Possible Futures Call for Abstracts, with Ashli Stokes and Maryam Ishaq "In this call, we are looking for abstracts for chapters that address the question of Scottish representation through and around food from devolution (1999) to contemporary and current visions of the future. As Scotland increasingly differentiates itself politically and economically, we ask what foods define Scotland, and how this communicative work helps distinguish it from England, the rest of the UK, and Europe." Coalition of Immokalee Workers shared the following message "Food Inc, 2" tells the story of an industry nearly a decade later still in dire need for reform -- including the now familiar tales of factory farms squeezing workers at the very bottom of the industry and the corporate behemoths squeezing suppliers to their breaking point at the very top. But the sequel also tells the story of several proven solutions that give hope that a more humane food industry is, in fact, possible. Of particular note to the Fair Food Nation, " Food Inc, 2" devotes a significant portion of its 1 hour and 34 minute runtime to the successful efforts of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Presidential Medal-winning Fair Food Program to transform agriculture and empower farmworkers to be the frontline monitors of their own rights, ending generations of exploitation and abuse for tens of thousands of US farmworkers. The story of the CIW’s struggle is brilliantly told by the CIW’s own Gerardo Reyes Chavez, himself a farmworker for nearly two decades. Through extended interviews, Gerardo walks the viewer through the Campaign for Fair Food, the birth of the Fair Food Program in 2011, and the urgent need to expand this successful worker-driven program as far and wide as possible today. With an eye to practical, proven solutions to the food system’s many ills, “Food, Inc. 2” champions the Fair Food Program as the answer to preventing forced labor and other extreme abuses in farmwork, with a long and documented track record of results. The acclaimed documentary even names those major food giants who have so far refused to join, despite the FFP's universal recognition as the new gold standard for human rights in the US agricultural industry: Wendy’s, Publix, and Kroger." The tourist tax is a hot topic of debate as Edinburgh pushes on with plans to be the first part of Scotland to introduce the charge. But what do other cities around the world do? From an incredible, two-mile, underground beer pipeline to dedicated arts funds, an academy for pastry chefs to smart marketing, we took a look at how some of the world's top tourist destinations use the funds they raise. There's plenty of food for thought for Edinburgh from promoting the city to high-spending visitors, supporting the arts and heritage, protecting the environment and tackling social inequality. https://lnkd.in/e8Z9WDft

Excerpt: The recently published Food Power Politics: The Food Story of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement by Bobby J. Smith II spotlights the role of food as a political weapon and tool for resistance in the context of the Civil Rights Movement. Building upon his dissertation at Cornell University, Food Power Politics sets out to understand the importance of food in the strategies used by activists in the Civil Rights Movement, Smith tells Food Tank. He explains that when communities use food as a tool of resistance, it grants them the agency to feed themselves on their own terms. By exploring power struggles over food, the book envisions a future where these communities have autonomy in creating and sustaining a self-sufficient local food system.

Hello Friends! Over the past three years, I've had the incredible opportunity to work in the craft beer industry and the home brewing supply market in Sweden. During this journey, I founded Crooked Moon Brewing together with some great friends and learned invaluable lessons about running a business. I also consulted for Brewski, managing everything from shipping logistics to designing graphics for Brewskival in both 2022 and 2023. This included creating signs, posters, banners, festival bands, and designing 50-60 beer labels for Brewski. However, life took an unexpected turn. On February 2nd, we welcomed our second daughter, Sóley. Shortly afterwards, I was informed that due to changes in the home brewing market post-pandemic, my role was no longer needed. While I understood the decision, it was still a significant change. Fortunately, I was able to secure a part-time consulting role with Brewski over the summer, which helped support my family. As of September, I began my parental leave, partly because I hadn't secured another role after Brewskival, and my wife, (who has been a complete rock during these intense periods of dreaming and late nights), works in Denmark and is the primary earner, needed to return to work. The beer industry has faced challenges, and many passionate individuals have lost their livelihoods. While my preference is to stay in this industry, I'm open to opportunities outside of it as well, given my responsibility to my two daughters. I'm looking for a full-time or flexible part-time job, as I also manage some minor brewery operations, which occasionally require immediate attention. My parental leave ends in February, and I am actively seeking employment. While I don't have a formal university degree, I bring a wealth of self-taught knowledge in various media productions like music, video, graphic design, and illustrations. I excel at finding unique solutions and rethinking traditional methods. I'm particularly passionate about beer chemistry and always eager to deep into research and finding new products and solutions. I may not be the best fit for specialized role like a Japanese sushi knife, but I am versatile and adaptable, much more like a Swiss Army knife. If you or someone you know could use my skills and enthusiasm, please reach out to me via DM. Feel free to share this post, and if it makes you happy, clap your hands! Here is some (not all) of the work I've done over the years. https://lnkd.in/d5EwCPcw
