Interestingly, across the pond, independent department stores are defying the trend of decline, experiencing a resurgence as consumers rediscover their love for physical shopping. By honing in on local consumer preferences and investing in their stores, experiences, and brand relationships, these independents are thriving and hitting the sweet spot on local high streets. In some ways, this mirrors what we are seeing in Canada, with the growth of La Maison Simons and their bold moves into new markets across the country. Whether independent or not, what is clear is that client relationships and outstanding service are core to achieving positive results! Macy's just announced that they will be closing 150 underperforming stores and have plans to monetize between $600 to $750 million of assets through 2026. I am actually shocked that Macy's is still around. I remember hearing about the retail apocalypse in 2017-2018 and 6 years later, Macy's is still standing. It is amazing to think that one generation ago, a department store like Macy's was an anchor tenant that entire shopping malls could be built around and now the stores are ghost towns. How many of the old department stores that used to anchor malls across America will be left in another 25 years? I doubt there will be any. If I had to guess, the next generation probably won't even know what a department store is. Recently, I read a RetailWire article about Macy’s shutting down 150 of its 500 stores. For those in other parts of the world, Macy’s is a department store chain, and its stores often anchor large shopping malls. However, while that describes more than 25% of its stores, it represents less than 10% of sales. Some might say Macy’s is “trimming the fat” or “getting rid of the dogs.” From a financial perspective, that may be true. But it’s more than that.
