“We need to think about more than human need. We need to think about the needs of nature," said Rattan Lal, distinguished professor with School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University, at the recent Brazil Gateway Forum on Climate Change. The forum brought together experts with support from the Meli Bees Network, Ohio State Sustainability Institute, Center for Latin American Studies and many others to talk about how sustainable agriculture can help to sow the seeds of a better world. In order for Humanity to harmonize with Natural Laws, we need to understand and align our methods and processes with natural cycles - regeneration. As the Planet’s hydrological and thermal systems change both naturally and human induced, it is necessary to refine the design and methods we use water, soil, and air. Most of our industries have relied on the obsolete method of, “the solution to pollution is dilution.” This has created feedback loops in our environment that are toxic to life. For example, now we microplastics in our air, water and soil - Everywhere. We have changed the chemistry of the oceans surface levels so that they are unable to support life of micro-organisms that sequester carbon and are the building blocks of the food chain in our oceans. We are now using the science of systems and thermodynamics to better understand the flows of energy on the planet from weather patterns, circulation of materials, and even migratory patterns of animals to better understand the symphony of life on Earth. The tools we have created from satellite earth observations to artificial intelligence capabilities of analyzing massive amounts of data are instrumental to helping us work toward existing in stasis with our environment. Symbiosis is our objective if we are to appropriately evolve toward a future that sustains life for humans and our fellow earthlings. It is time to mature beyond the caterpillar and become a regenerative society, our Butterfly version.

Our COO, Jesse Kahn, participated in The Climate Collaborative Climate Day during last week’s Natural Products Expo West. We feel so lucky to stand alongside so many smart and committed leaders worldwide, all focused on creating a universally more sustainable food system. Here are his top 3 takeaways about the intersection of food and climate from the Climate Day event: 1. Regenerative Agriculture is on everyone's mind, from producers to retailers  There is serious growth in the adoption of regenerative practices and significant (and growing!) consumer demand for regenerative products. ROC is the fastest-growing certification in the Natural foods channel over the past year! 2. The future of climate reporting is transparent As new requirements for companies to report on their climate footprint continue to be announced and enforced, a growing need for transparency, as well as a common language around both environmental disclosures and overall ESG activities becomes crucial. It's proven that companies who set and achieve their ESG targets are more profitable! 3. Science and storytelling go hand in hand Consumers don't read impact reports, and we need both qualitative and quantitative data to contextualize the work of moving companies towards a better climate future. This data will help connect disparate but related attributes like quality, health, and price. We have to get comfortable with complexity. There are so many great companies leading the way, and we're proud to support them!
