I had gender affirming surgery because my wife's company made a change in their benefits to cover it— a workplace decision unrelated to my identity or my doctor's recommendation allowed me to get gender-affirming surgery. When I talk to teams about trans inclusion, they often tell me how powerless they feel. They can't change the views of their transphobic lawmakers. They can't change the staggering violence that trans people face. What I tell them and what I will tell you now: you have the power to make a substantial impact. You have the power to ensure that the trans people in your life are supported and to create a more trans-inclusive organization. The person at my wife's company responsible for the change in benefits likely wasn't thinking of me specifically. The decision was likely part of a sweeping change in their benefits policy. Yet the decision had a profound impact on my life. The decisions that you make can have a profound impact even if you never know it. I am proof of that. Don't wait until something like Trans Awareness Week to be trans inclusive. Make the choice every day. Choose to be inclusive. Choose to make that difference. #TransAwarenessWeek #inclusion #Transgender
This is the highest compliment I can give when I see a great pic....FRAMEWORTHY!
I will never forget the day a few years ago when I gave a temp employee a permanent offer. He immediately broke down in tears and said "Now i will finally be able to get gender affirming surgery." I knew he was trans but I had not thought about how life changing this job would be for him. It changed my perspective forever.
Such an inspiring reminder that every decision, no matter how small, can have a profound impact on someone's life. Let's choose to be inclusive every day. Thank you for sharing your story and empowering others to make a difference.
Oh, that's great that you got the coverage. So many have nothing at all now.
I’m so happy to read this Nate. I’m happy you received the care you needed. It’s especially important for us to realize what all is included in gender affirming care for everyone. ❤️
To really shake the anti- woke folks- I had my too surgery while on Medicare! I’d tried for years to have gender affirming care and was always turned away because I might want kids someday or other garbage. Once I was on medicare it was super easy to get the top surgery I’d dreamt of aince puberity hit!
Congratulations happy holidays
I don't know you Nate, but I'm a high school teacher, and I deal with kids who may soon be in your situation. Thank you for posting this and sharing your story.
Someone I love very much is trans. She is one of the most important people in my life. I try to celebrate her strength and beauty every day. Thank you for sharing so much of your story.
