Today a few words about GLP-1 medication which lately became so popular… and no wonder, because they give a spectacular effect in #weight_loss benefits. Just check the skinny looks of some of the Celebrities :) but please be careful because what most of the patients dont know is that GLP-1 does not provide #targeted_weight_loss. As I have stated publicly for years, EATING RED MEAT IS NOT BAD FOR YOU. In this exhaustive study, published last month in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, it turns out it's actually slightly more likely that eating red meat is good for you (64%), than bad (36%), but for the most part it has no significant effect either way. I hope our health policy-makers are paying attention. "Our specification curve analysis included 1208 unique analytic specifications, of which 435 (36.0%) yielded a hazard ratio equal to or more than 1 for the effect of red meat on all-cause mortality and 773 (64.0%) less than 1. The specification curve analysis yielded a median hazard ratio of 0.94 (interquartile range: 0.83–1.05). Forty-eight specifications (3.97%) were statistically significant, 40 of which indicated unprocessed red meat to reduce all-cause mortality and eight of which indicated red meat to increase mortality." https://lnkd.in/gPp6Jx9U

My career has been shaped by the dynamic shifts in our approach to dietary recommendations, moving from a focus on addressing nutritional deficiencies to a more comprehensive strategy aimed at preventing chronic diseases. The complexity of unraveling the connections between diet and health has been both challenging and rewarding. Despite the difficulties in identifying causal links, commitment lies in advancing methodologies and addressing the historical inaccuracies associated with dietary assessments. Looking ahead, the horizon appears promising with an abundance of data anticipated from nutritional-epidemiologic studies. This wealth of information will undoubtedly lay the groundwork for detailed analyses and meta-analyses, resulting in a new era of understanding in nutritional science. As we navigate the future, the challenge extends to crafting recommendations for diverse population subgroups, each defined by unique factors such as age, sex, and genetics. Evidence consistently suggests that dietary fiber provides protection from developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), but how that protection occurs has remained unclear. Now, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine led by Qibin Qi, Ph.D., have found that eating more dietary fiber may protect people from T2D by promoting beneficial gut bacteria that produce beneficial substances (metabolites) when they utilize fiber. Their findings were published online on March 28 in Circulation Research, a journal of the American Heart Association. Dr. Qi and his colleagues, including first author Zheng Wang, Ph.D., looked at data from more than 11,000 participants in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, for which Einstein is one of four national sites. The researchers found that higher fiber intake was associated with specific "good" bacterial species in participants’ gut microbiome and serum metabolites related to those bacteria that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and improve glucose metabolism. Those gut microbes and metabolites were associated with lower risk of developing T2D during an average follow-up period of six years. Knowing which bacteria and metabolites are linked to higher fiber intake and lower risk for T2D could lead to personalized diets and other therapeutic strategies for people at risk for the disease. Dr. Qi is professor of epidemiology & population health and associate director of epidemiology & population health center for population cohorts at Einstein, and a member of the National Cancer Institute–designated Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center. The EAT-Lancet diet is a framework designed to promote environmental sustainability while also preventing common diseases such as type 2 diabetes. How do we know if the diet actually works?   Anna Stubbendorff, doctoral student in nutritional epidemiology at Lund University Diabetes Center, and Daniel Borch Ibsen, researcher in nutritional epidemiology at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, have led a new study that has investigated how useful several different diet scores are at assessing adherence to this diet.   "We need reliable diet scores in order to develop evidence-based nutrition recommendations that can help prevent disease and premature death. In this study, we have used the diet scores on three population studies to determine which scores are best at evaluating adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet. The study shows that the results differ greatly depending on which score we use," says Daniel Borch Ibsen, researcher in nutritional epidemiology.   The results are published in The Lancet Planetary Health.
