28 JANUARY, GLOBAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DAY: What do you think of when you hear the word "community"? What do you think of when you hear "community engagement"? Community, as a concept, is a fairly broad term. It could mean anything from your neighborhood to your workplace, sports fans to music festival followers, structured organizations to folks that just like hanging in a park on Sundays. Any one given person usually isn't part of just one community. But, there's one community that stands out for folks, a community they've thought about joining or a community they've thought about leaving to give more room for things they want to be involved. Today's the day to think on these things and engage proactively. Are there issues that impact your community that you can help with? If you've been planning on more participation, might now be a good time to do that? If you hadn't made plans, is now a good time to start? Is it time to reevaluate what your community or organization is doing for the community at large? Can it do better? Are there more questions you could be asking? Have at it and get to it! Learn communities from Jaipur. We all know how difficult it is to wake up early on a Sunday, but what if I tell you that 25 people (and 40+ waiting) woke up early and trekked to a hilltop for some freshly brewed coffee? Jaipur Trekker's Community organised a fun trekking experience (as they always do) for their community members. They collaborated with the Jaipur Coffee Community and organised a fun coffee brewing experience after their biweekly trek. This trek was not only a paid experience but also a maxed-out event. They filled all the seats and kept getting calls for extra seats. Being in community/events, I know how hard it is to make people spend some money. Why do I see this as a win: 1. People wake up early for an experience. 2. People paid for an event (I am talking about tier 2 cities where people are used to of free experiences.) 3. A successful collaboration and sponsorship for a meaningful less crowded event.
