🌱 Join us on our groundbreaking work to restore seagrass meadows in Kent! 🌊 Our conservationists have launched an ambitious project to restore seagrass meadows, vital for biodiversity and the health of our marine ecosystems. 🌸 Did you know seagrass is the only flowering plant that grows in seawater? These underwater meadows provide essential habitat and food for marine life, but 44% has been lost from the UK coastline since 1936. We’re trialling and refining methods to plant seeds from dwarf eelgrass - one of two eelgrass species that grows in UK waters – each one as tiny as a sesame seed. This seagrass restoration initiative is part of our broader project, Restoring the Thamescape, which aims to restore coastal habitats in the Thames through restoring multiple habitats together, including native oysters and saltmarsh. Join our conservationists as they work to turn the tide for British seagrass: https://ow.ly/OPHi50QiGzA #Conservation #MarineConservation

Following the catastrophic 2019-20 bushfires, habitat that survived intact has become an increasingly vital refuge for biodiversity, particularly threatened species. Conservation on private land not only helps threatened species and ecosystems recover from bushfires, it delivers nature-based solutions to help mitigate climate change in the first instance.
Max Dingle's conservation agreement property near Sussex Inlet, on the NSW South Coast, was spared the worst of bushfires that scarred the region in 2019 and 2020. As senior ecologist James Lindsey explains, the property provided a valuable refuge for many species trying to escape the catastrophic fires. #bushfires #blacksummer #privatelandconservation #conservation

Game meat production presents a unique opportunity to develop successful wildlife economies that benefit both human well-being and environmental sustainability. However, the industry’s potential is hindered by significant health-related challenges including product contamination, zoonotic diseases transmission and nutritional issues. These health risks pose substantial threats to the economic viability and ecological sustainability of this industry. Despite the important role that game meat plays in the global food system, several controversies persist. The industry faces significant challenges related to health and safety management, cultural values, and ethical considerations. As we look into the integration of the OneHealth principles, the goal is to support the development of policies and practices that foster sustainability, public health, animal welfare, and economic viability. By addressing these interconnected dimensions, we aim to contribute to the promotion of a more sustainable and trusted alternative protein source which will benefit both communities and the broader ecosystem. #Research #AfricanWildlifeEconomyInstitute #OneHealth #Sustainability #GameMeat #OGRC #Innovation #AfricanWildlifeEconomyInstitute
This is Lydia Bhebe African youth are the future of conservation efforts in the continent. They will inherit the natural resources and protected areas that the previous generations have worked so hard to preserve. By involving them in conservation efforts, they can learn about the importance of conservation and develop the skills and knowledge needed to continue to protect these areas in the future. Conservation efforts can have significant benefits for young people in Africa. By preserving natural resources and wildlife habitats, conservation efforts can help to create opportunities for ecotourism, which can generate income and employment opportunities for local communities. #NextGenOppGen #Youth #OGRC #OGRC #PeoplePlacesPlanet
