Answering "Who did it better?" can often come down to who appreciates it more. In the sneakers space, do brands or enthusiasts appreciate the product more? Today, Nike held a draw for the anticipated release of their collaboration with Travis Scott on the (Mac) Attack: the "Cactus Attack," if you will. The release was extremely limited relative to demand, with demand far beyond what's been seen since June with multiple Nike Attack releases (both inline and collaborative). As draw winners receive their "Cactus Attack" pairs, comparisons between the collab version and the June-released "OG" version will ensue. Did Nike do it better on the OG or the collab? Is the collab version for hype beasts and the OG retro for real sneakerheads? Hopefully, some of the content will be worth the views. For some, however, there is an outlier—way off the radar for most in the "game." And that is the www.mcdowells92.com Air Pro Sport 2 tribute to the Nike Mac Attack released in 2022. Not a sneaker retro executed by the brand. But a passion project delivered by an enthusiast. Give this silhouette time to breathe beyond the hype cycle of modern life. Perhaps it won't be a question of "better," but one of "best." Superlative versus comparative. And just maybe real ones will give a nod to the "Mick Attack." Special sauce, no seeds.

When I was in 5th grade, I begged my mom to buy me a pair of ASICS running shoes. I had seen them in a magazine. It was the lightest running shoe to ever be invented by any company at the time. Each shoe weighed 100 grams, the weight of two eggs. At the tender age of eleven, I understood why the product was innovative. Also, I was attracted to the shoe’s design. It had a blue and white top with orange ASICS stripes. It had an iconic look. The photo is that shoe, ASICS Sorties UL 100 from 1986. I found them again in a display case at the ASICS Sports Museum in Kobe, Japan in 2018. We just started working with the brand. ASICS used to make shoes that not only serious runners would desire, but also an 11-year-old would lust after. But that was more than three decades ago. In 2021, at Hakone Ekiden, Japan's most famous collegiate running race, not a single runner wore ASICS shoes. 95.7% wore Nike, a corporate offspring of ASICS. Three years since then, it’s a different story. In 2024, Nike’s share shrunk drastically to 42.6%. ASICS’, on the other hand, managed to capture 24.8% of the runners in the race. And it’s not marketing that’s driving this turnaround. In the five-year span from 2015 to 2020, ASICS’s revenue shrunk from $3.7 billion to $3.1 billion.   However, since 2021, the brand has managed to do a turnaround and has added a billion dollars to its topline. Its revenue in 2023 was at $4.08 billion, an increase of over 31% in a few years and the highest in its corporate history. I started working with Mr. Yasuhito Hirota, the architect of the turnaround, in 2019, a year after he joined ASICS as Chief Operating Officer. He was recruited by Mr. Motoi Oyama, ASICS’s former CEO and the son-in-law of Kihachiro Onitsuka, the founder of ASICS. As Mr. Oyama has retired in 2021, Mr. Hirota has been elevated to the CEO. When we started working with ASICS, they knew the brand was in trouble. In 2018, the company lost 20 billion yen, or $175 million, per its annual report. At that time, ASICS’s ask to us was simple but broad: “Can you help us with our marketing?” I’m paraphrasing here but that was the gist of their ask and to be fair, I thought that would be how we should and could help them. But it wasn’t marketing after all.
