“Barry and Garry” are two characters we created that have been in dozens of top performing ads for a LOT of different games 🎬🎥 The idea was to create an icon duo that act like silly slackers who love to review games. They make fun of each other, but they’re also inseparable and defensive of eachother. Garry is better at video games, but Barry has more “street smarts”. I'm always impressed at how fast the game development community adapts, innovates, and in this case - takes action! Unity blindsided the entire game development industry with their announcement of a new run time fee that'll be introduced by Jan 2024, effectively charging developers a fee per download...A fee that will decimate the Free to Play mobile market. While I thought I was moving fast to mitigate our risk at Road Burn, 16 companies have already collectively switched off their Unity ads monetisation, immediately cutting off unitys revenue source from those games while demanding Unity revise their new fee structure. We are excited to post Signum Growth's Bits of Signum - our second episode with Yonatan Raz-Fridman, Founder and CEO of Supersocial Inc. - hosted by me and Eliza Jappinen. We talked 3D internet, the difference between #Brands and #IP and how to think about Supersocial + Roblox on both fronts. On the topic of Epic Games’s creator platform, #UEFN, an idea evolved since we recorded this on the day after the The Walt Disney Company deal was announced. At that moment, there was a prevailing concern around Epic’s revenue share for creators that was announced a year ago at GDC - the idea is that Epic will pay creators 40% of revenues based on *engagement* that they drive on the platform. Not surprisingly, Fortnite drives a lot of the engagement, leading to payments back to Epic. The concern voiced by the creator community was something like this - if Fortnite, the LEGO Group, and now Disney (!!) will supercharge Epic's own engagement, how can an indie creator on UEFN squeeze in to get a share of the money?  We have thought about it more, and we wonder if the whole topic could be somewhat related to another topic we discuss a lot - IP rights. Tim Sweeney has an approach that we believe is ahead of the curve, as evidenced by his response to Steam’s stance that they would ban games which include #AI. Tim said in his tweet in response to Steam, "Put it on the Epic Games Store. We don't ban games for using new technologies." In short, Epic leaves a lot up to the creator, and it can be baked into the tech at the outset. The #NOAI tag allows artists to specify whether their work is allowed to be used in AI tools. Could IP rights could also be baked in? Such rights are often ignored in early periods of experimentation, and we have certainly seen this in UGC. It is our belief that technologies that contemplate IP rights from the start (a combination of blockchain and AI?) will have the most longevity over the long term. Question: Could Epic / UEFN actually be creating a space for indie creators to take advantage of all of this content that Epic is bringing into Fortnite? Imagine win-win-win relationships between LEGO/Disney, Epic and indie creators who can make content integrating those characters. It's increasingly difficult to generate audience for kids IP within a fragmented content ecosystem, yet for toy companies the funnel needs filling enough to convert cash-strapped, eco-conscious parents into buyers of toys. Step up Roblox. I've said for a while how an activation on the platform has become an indispensable part of kids IP strategy. Not only does it offer huge reach, but it is an excellent engagement and community building space. Broadcasting content on Roblox (I use 'broadcasting' intentionally) encourages shared experience. Kids gather to watch shows together and then go on to play - immersing in the world, characters and narrative in a way that can generate toy demand far quicker than relying on watching content alone. Spin Master has harnessed the power of Roblox to debut their Netflix original series 'Unicorn Academy' into Gamefam’s game Twilight Daycare before it goes to the streamer, marking a crossover of entertainment and gaming and signalling Roblox's power not only as a social gaming platform, but as a kids video distribution powerhouse in its own right. #entertainmentindustry #gaming
