Lufthansa Cargo and Best Services International Freight join forces to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel 🌱 Together with Best Services International Freight (BSI), we have agreed to reduce the Chinese logistics company's CO2 emissions associated with airfreight. BSI will invest in a total of around 137,000 liters of #SustainableAviationFuel (SAF) at #LufthansaCargo to offset the CO2 emissions caused by its flights. We signed the agreement on June 26 at this year's #TransportLogisticChina in Shanghai. "Best Services International Freight is our first customer in China to opt for the use of more than 100 tons of #SAF," said J. FLORIAN PFAFF, Head of Region Asia Pacific. "Examples like this help reduce our CO2 emissions and promote the use of SAF worldwide. Every customer who takes advantage of this opportunity is making a significant contribution to the decarbonization of logistics. The interest shows us that there is great potential for this, especially in Asia." "The cooperation with Lufthansa Cargo strengthens our partnership. As China's leading air cargo logistics company and an industry leader in the digitalization process, we combine progress with responsibility," said Dr. Wilson Wong Group CEO of BSI. "With limited SAF production globally, agreements like this are of paramount importance." SAF is a critical technology key to more sustainable flying and essential to the energy transition in aviation. Over its entire lifecycle, biogenic SAF has a CO2 footprint that is approximately 80% lower than that of conventional kerosene. SAF can be used in regular flight operations without any infrastructure adjustments. The SAF used by us is produced using the HEFA process, for example from used cooking oils. As only forestry, agricultural or catering waste is used, there is no conflict with food production. We offer SAF via the Lufthansa Group from the world's leading manufacturers. Since September 2021, all our customers have been able to have their freight transported more sustainably by opting for the "Sustainable Choice" add-on service. The Lufthansa Group and its companies are actively involved in the research and development of the next generation of sustainable aviation fuels. In numerous projects worldwide, the Lufthansa Group is currently working with partners from science and industry - from start-ups to established energy companies - on more SAF. We are pursuing a clear strategy for a more sustainable future and, together with the Lufthansa Group, have set ourselves ambitious climate protection targets: The Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and to halve net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures. In addition to SAF, more sustainable aviation also requires major efforts for a modern fleet and efficiency improvements in flight operations. Only in this combination can the change be successful in the long term. #EnablingGlobalBusiness #TogetherForSustainability

Exciting News for the Used Cooking Oil Recycling Industry! At American Bio Source, we are absolutely thrilled to share a groundbreaking development in the aviation industry! Virgin Atlantic is making a remarkable eco-friendly shift by utilizing our recycled used cooking oil to create Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for their commercial flights. This initiative highlights the incredible potential of repurposing used cooking oil, a resource that would otherwise go to waste, into a clean and sustainable energy source for aviation. It's a win-win for both the environment and the aviation industry. https://lnkd.in/gUpuzvDT

Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines (SIA), two of Asia’s top aviation firms, have tied up to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the region, a critical initiative for a sector which is facing decarbonisation challenges. SAF has the potential to reduce more than 80 per cent of life cycle carbon emissions, although due to its low production volumes, SAF typically costs three to five times as much as traditional jet fuel, according to industry media AvBuyer. Green aviation fuels include biofuels produced from agricultural or forestry residues, algae, bio-waste, used cooking oil or certain animal fats, and recycled jet fuels produced from waste gases and waste plastic, according to its legal definition. Food crop-based fuels and fuels derived from palm and soy materials are excluded.

What an inspiring cross-industry collaboration! Logistics giant DHL Express announced today a new strategic partnership with UK-based international bank Standard Chartered to co-invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, enabling Standard Chartered to balance its upstream logistics emissions with carbon credits. DHL’s GoGreen service provides shippers with the option of climate-neutral shipping through investments in internationally recognized climate protection projects to offset emissions generated during transport. GoGreen Plus aims to offer real emissions reductions through carbon “insetting,” enabling shippers to replace conventional fossil fuels with sustainable fuels or clean technologies, such as SAF.

📣 A Leap Forward for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Spain As the Head of Sustainable Aviation at Repsol, I am thrilled to share a pivotal development in our journey towards greener skies. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has recently applauded the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge Commission of Spain’s Congress of Deputies for their legislative proposal to bolster the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Spain. This non-binding proposal, supported by both the Partido Popular (PP) and the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE), outlines a strategic plan for the Spanish government to: ✅ Provide incentives for SAF production, ✅ Fund research and development for new SAF sources, ✅ Establish public-private partnerships to advance SAF, ✅ Develop strategies for accessing waste and bio-material for SAF feedstock. The significance of this proposal cannot be overstated. It represents a collective recognition of the urgent need to decarbonize aviation—a sector pivotal to global connectivity and economic growth—without compromising access to air travel. Rafael Schvartzman, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Europe, emphasized the importance of converting these proposals into law to meet the growing demand for SAF, which is crucial for the aviation industry to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The European Union has already set a near-term mandate for SAF use, starting at 2% of all aviation fuel uplifted at EU airports in 2025, escalating to 6% by 2030. Meanwhile, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is targeting a 5% reduction in aviation’s carbon emissions by 2030 through the use of SAF and Low Carbon Aviation Fuels. As we stand at the cusp of this transformative era, it is heartening to see Spain poised to become a leader in Europe and set a global example for sustainable aviation practices. The proposed measures will not only address the lag in SAF production but also create jobs, strengthen the tourism sector, and enhance energy independence. At Repsol, we are committed to supporting these initiatives and contributing to a sustainable future for aviation. We look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to turn these proposals into actionable policies that will propel us towards our net-zero ambitions. #SAF is here...act now! ✈ #SustainableAviation #SAF #NetZero #GreenEnergy #Innovation #Collaboration
