Does the European air ✈️ recovery differ if we measure flights vs seat density? Our new #datasnapshot investigates... With year to date traffic having recovered to 91% of 2019 flights ✈️ we take a look 🔎 at the 15 largest #airlines. 👉 Compared to 2019 flight levels are higher for around 25% of airlines, whereas seat levels are higher than that at 33%. 4 airlines in particular have stronger seat growth than flight growth, reflecting increased seat density on intra-European flights. And for them, that density increase has been driven primarily by new Airbus models. Just one of our top carriers has actually decreased seat density in the last 4 years... Discussing a potential timeframe on when OEM production will normalize during the recent #ISTATAsia conference, Sinead Cormican, Head of Leasing Customers at Airbus, could not give a definitive answer, except to say “it’s a tricky question” especially when it comes to a product where there are multiple suppliers on the chain. “It's not like it just goes from red to green – it's a constant process that needs monitoring. Airbus Commercial CEO Weighs In on COMAC Competitiveness Airbus and Boeing have different views on when, or whether, Chinese manufacturer COMAC will become a competitive threat. At last year’s Paris Airshow, then-Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal said he did not believe COMAC would become a viable competitor for at least the next 10 years. However, Airbus Commercial CEO Christian Scherer believes COMAC is already a serious competitor. Speaking at a pre-Farnborough Airshow briefing in London on Sunday, he said the state-owned Chinese company was already making inroads into the market, albeit in a limited way. “It’s not when, or if, they’re a competitor so far; they’re very much influential in the PRC [People’s Republic of China] and perhaps in the surrounding areas and countries,” he said. “There’s significant sustained demand not only in China … for the cake to be split up between all the contenders,” he added. “COMAC has brought an aircraft to market: it sells. In very, very small quantities, but that’s where you start. But COMAC hasn’t really brought anything new, of differentiating substance, to the market, compared to the ‘reference product’ that I would say is the Airbus A320/321 [or] from what Airbus was 50 years ago.” The original A320 introduced fly-by-wire and sidesticks to the commercial airliner market. “Trying to develop a technological sovereignty here in Europe, Airbus didn’t imitate a product already in the market; it brought something new, and that accelerated our [market] penetration.” COMAC’s latest product, the C919 “is effectively an A320neo,” Scherer said. As values of used aircraft enjoy a boost from the supply-side constraints in the wake of the pandemic, should we just enjoy the results or perhaps keep in mind where such values will be when the market next acheives a supply/demand balance? ATLANTA- Airbus has formally requested an exception from the FAA to permit the installation of a front cabin with doors on A321neo aircraft intended for a "U.S. operator (Possibly Delta Air Lines)." Airbus A320ceo family values and lease rates were revised upwards again on 26 January 2024 by our Value Review Board, supported by ample transactional evidence. Mid-life (8-15-year-old) A321s saw the biggest gains of up to 19% for values and 13% for lease rates since our last revision in September 2023. A320 increases were mostly in the single digit percentage range, after bigger gains in the recent past. All this is caused by constrained supply (caused by grounded GTF-powered aircraft and new aircraft delivery delays from both large OEMs) in the face of strong demand growth.

As Loganair Limited bids adieu to Saab 340s, the European passenger experience aboard this iconic propeller-driven aircraft grows increasingly rare. Unless you opt for passenger charters, limited options remain, such as Trade Air's PSO flights in Croatia, and Diamond Sky flights in Estonia, both operated by SprintAir ; Aeroitalia flights from Ancona by RAF-AVIA, or Västflyg flights in Sweden operated by NyxAir OÜ. Without public service obligation routes, the scheduled service market for these 30-seaters faces uncertainty. The robust train and road infrastructure, coupled with larger aircraft capacities at lower operating costs on similar routes, exert significant pressure on the regional aviation segment. Yet, regions like Australia and Canada heavily rely on the Saab 340, showcasing its indispensable role. Recently, I had the privilege to discuss this with Lim Kim Hai, Chairman of Regional Express Holdings Limited. He highlighted the challenges facing traditional scheduled regional flying using Saab 340Bs, citing acute pilot shortages, supply chain hurdles (especially engine availability), slender profit margins, and competition from larger operators. This shift prompted them to diversify into businesses like aeromedical and fly-in-fly-out, both tender-based. But, despite the resilience displayed by this aircraft, there's no immediate replacement solution for the aging 30-seaters. The introduction of the Deutsche Aircraft D328eco is yet to happen, and it seems all this is suggesting a potential pivot towards 40-seater capacities in regional routes.
