Artificial intelligence hype is "on the way down", according to author Dave Birss. Citing the Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, Birss notes that generative AI "is nicely over the peak of inflated expectations and speeding into the trough of disillusionment." While many people see this as a bad thing, Birss explains why he's personally delighted. "The peak of inflated expectations is defined by the noisy futurati endlessly proclaiming the death of the past and spouting cliches about how 'this changes everything'. And I hate it." Do you think AI has been overhyped? Share your thoughts in the comments.

AI is on the way down, and I couldn't be happier. This is Gartner's latest Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, and Generative AI is nicely over the Peak of Inflated Expectations and speeding into the Trough of Disillusionment. Most people will see this as a bad thing for AI, but let me explain why I'm delighted. The Peak of Inflated Expectations is defined by the noisy futurati endlessly proclaiming the death of the past and spouting cliches about how "this changes everything". And I hate it. They do it for every "next big thing" technology: virtual reality, blockchain, Google Glass, crypto. And how many of those have lived up to the hype? The endless echo chamber of hyperbole is pretty tiresome. So this is how I believe the Trough Of Disillusionment will improve the situation. 👍 Reality check: This phase helps separate realistic expectations from inflated hype. It allows for a more grounded assessment of generative AI's actual capabilities and limitations. 👍 Reduced misinformation: It should help reduce hyperbole and misleading claims, leading to a more accurate public understanding of AI capabilities. 👍 Focus on practical applications: As the initial excitement wanes, developers and businesses will focus more on finding practical, value-adding use cases rather than chasing trendy but potentially hollow applications. 👍 Improved critical thinking: The public and potential users will likely become more discerning about AI claims, leading to better-informed decisions and more thoughtful adoption. 👍 Refinement of technology: This phase often spurs developers to address shortcomings and improve their technologies to meet real-world needs more effectively. 👍 Clearing the chaff: Most of the AI vaporware and bandwagonware will vanish into thin air. The gold rush opportunists will move on to the next big thing to try to make their easy fortune. Maybe you can now understand why I'm not troubled about AI drifting out of the spotlight. Do you agree? And what piece of hype has annoyed you the most?

Chatbots may have been overhyped, but AI hasn’t. It will transform education and medical discovery, even if AI development stopped now. It's also cliché to compare AI with previous technologies like virtual reality and blockchain. And I hate it. And the risk is also real: https://thoughts.jackschwarz.com/p/will-ai-take-my-job?r=47x8vd&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

History repeats, see the hype of…..Internet…blockchain, and many other technologies. The marketing machine pushes always beyond, even Wall Street analysts are used to price in an exponential growth without discontinuity (see e.g. the last Nvidia earnings call and related, non realistic expectatiions). It takes time to explore a new technology, to understand how it could be exploited and tailored for different use cases. Long story short: it’s the typical technology learning curve

Of course, AI is overhyped and is using work of other people, sometimes without permission.

I appreciate your views and I am likewise less impressed by hype-making related to new technologies. However, maybe not in current versions as AI is still a lot in its infancy, but the breakthrough in REAL AI, will likely have much more effects on human affairs than other technological breakthroughs.

LLMs and generative AI are overhyped. Machine learning in general is not.

AI is just a buzzword used for marketing purposes. The "AI" is nothing more than a procedurally generated algorithm and it has been in gaming for years before it became mainstream and companies use it to garner attention, move along.

I thought that the development of AI was to benefit us and would be a boon toward a utopian future instead of spreading dissent, disinformation, and hatred. What happened to the altruistic founders of this technological advancement?
