No two product managers are the same. And no two product management jobs will ever be the same. PMs work across just about every team in an organization: sales, customer service & support, marketing, finance, legal, executives, design, development, testing and more. It's so important to be comfortable with each of these areas of the business. But PMs don't work across every group on every product in every job. I've had product roles where I spent over 90% of my time with engineering teams. And I've had product roles where I was almost completely sales and marketing focused with very minor tech work. The stage of the product often dictates the focus of a product manager. If the product isn't working well and there are customer complaints, the biggest priority might be on tech. If sales are slow or growth is flat, it could be sales or marketing. Or there might be UX issues. New product launches require effort from legal and finance. Product looks different at every company. And it should. ****** I'm Austin, a product management leader, ex strategy consultant, former university educator and micro-PE investor. If you found this helpful, consider resharing ♻️ and follow for more content. ****** #productmanagement, #productdevelopment, #softwaredevelopment, #innovation #management, #technology, #careers, #marketing, #personaldevelopment, #programming, #design, #sales, #engineering, #careerdevelopment, #ux, #uxdesign

As a Product Owner currently working on a long term vision for my product, I feel compelled to tell the product world that PO is not an entry-level role. We need to stop telling aspiring Product Managers to apply for PO roles as a segue to product management. Maybe it was true once upon a time. I know I used to believe it. Maybe back when companies could afford to hire a Product Owner, a Product Manager, and a Project Manager. For better or worse, most of us are currently performing all of these functions to some degree, regardless of our actual title. The old advice is no longer relevant. You should apply for a Product Owner role if: - You have prior experience as a Product Owner. - You have product manager/product owner experience without holding the official title & can prove it. - You already work for the company hiring a Product Owner and have excellent internal support and connections to recommend you. - The job description states that they are interested in applicants with different titles/experience or no previous Product Owner experience is required. Not trying to kill hope, just setting proper expectations. Read job posts thoroughly. Can you prove that you have done or can do at least 60% of that job? Apply smarter. #productowner #productmanagement

We're looking for a Product Owner who's ready to make a tangible impact. At Firebend, we're building something that truly matters to our customers. We're not here for the startup theater or to chase the unicorn lottery. We're solving actual problems for enterprise customers who need our help yesterday. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱: Someone who will make our customers' needs their own and translate them into a compelling product vision that we bring to life. You'll be the bridge between our customer’s pain points and our developer’s keystrokes. No middlemen, no unnecessary layers of management. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲: • Comfortable telling stakeholders "no" when their ideas stink • Able to prioritize ruthlessly – we're not here to build every feature under the sun • Skilled at turning vague customer challenges into concrete, actionable specs • Unafraid to get your hands dirty with technical details when needed 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂: • Have built enterprise software with teams that move fast but do not break things • Know your way around a logistics operation (because those are the complexities we're tackling) • Have been in the trenches at Walmart or worked shoulder-to-shoulder with them • Are located in Northwest Arkansas, giving you the opportunity for regular face time with your customers We don't care about pedigree or years spent warming a seat elsewhere. We care about what you can do and how quickly you can learn. If you're looking for a cushy 9-to-5 with clear-cut responsibilities, this isn't that. But if you're ready to own your customer end-to-end, make decisions that matter, and build something that will improve how supply chains operate, then we should talk. If this sounds like an opportunity you’d thrive at, send me a DM. I'd love to hear from you!

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝘀. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿: 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗅 Ever felt confused about the roles of Product Owner and Product Manager? During job applications? You’re not alone! 🚀 In many organizations, they are seen as different titles. The Product Manager chats with the business and customers, while the Product Owner (“backlog admin”) sticks with developers, collecting and documenting requirements. 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿? This, my friends, is one of the worst anti-patterns in Product Management. 😬 As Marty Cagan wisely said, to truly rock it as a Product Manager, you need: 👉 Direct access to Users and Customers 👉 Direct access to Business Stakeholders 👉 Direct access to Engineers and Designers No middlemen. No exceptions. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽? Product Manager and Product Owner should be one and the same, handling end-to-end responsibilities. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿 is a role of accountability, and Product Manager is the job title. The best person to handle the Product Owner’s duties is an experienced Product Manager. 💡 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲? 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲? 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀𝗅 🤔⬇️ #productmanagement #JobsInProductManagement #Clarityofthoughts #upivot

🌟Why Product Management is Like Being a Superhero (Without the Cape) 🌟 Ever felt like a superhero in your day job? No? Well, clearly, you haven’t tried product management yet! 🦸♂️ Superpower #1: Mind-Reading PMs magically anticipate what users need before they even know it themselves. If only we could use this skill to predict the next big stock market trend! 📈 🦸♀️ Superpower #2: Time Travel We’re constantly living in the future, mapping out roadmaps and anticipating problems. And just like that, we're back in the present, fixing bugs and answering emails. 🚀📬 🦸♂️ Superpower #3: Multilingual Fluent in tech, business, and user-speak, all at once. Translating between developers who speak in code and stakeholders who speak in ROI metrics is our daily workout. 🧑💻📊 🦸♀️ Superpower #4: Negotiation Ninja Balancing the needs of customers, the demands of stakeholders, and the capacities of the dev team is like performing a high-wire act, but without the safety net. 🎪🤹 But let’s face it, even superheroes have their weaknesses. Ours? Trying to explain to our family what we do for a living! 😅 So, here’s to all the product managers out there, juggling priorities, fighting fires, and building the future one feature at a time. Keep wearing your invisible cape with pride! 🌟🦸♂️🦸♀️ #ProductManagement #OpentoWork
