Play is serious business. For both children and adults! It creates state of mind where we can be creative, open-minded, relax, learn easily,.. honestly it’s like a super-power. (and we might call it hobbies later in life ;) ) Do you remember ”that presentation/talk/advert” with twinkle in the eye? Anything playful is easier to keep in mind. There is a lot children can teach us. (us = boring adults) ;) #IKEAPlayReport
Play is essential for a child's development. 54% of parents would like more time to play with their children. In conjunction with the first-ever International Day of Play, we're launching our latest Play Report, which examines the role of play in children's well-being. Time for a soap box speech from me....I see "Shop Local" so often...using the excuse that if you shop at box stores all you do is help buy the CEO that 3rd home and by shopping local you help a Dad or Mom put food on the table, etc. For what it's worth...here's my take: When you buy from the box store you help employ dozens or more people who live in your neighborhood. All those Mothers and Fathers who work in the box stores need a job so they can put food on their table, help their kids have uniforms for sports and dance lessons.... When that C.E.O. builds that 3rd home, dozens of people make money designing, and building it, companies make money selling the products that go into it, and the companies who make those products employ dozens of employees. When you buy from a Mom and Pop store you help Mom and Pop and maybe a couple others...that's good to do too...but to claim you help your local community more by shopping local is completely wrong. Both are good ideas...shop local when it makes sense for your life, but shop...no matter where, because that's what makes America thrive.

Making a Holiday Shopping List for your toddler! Here are some tips to consider while making your list. 1.) 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘆𝘀 – You can teach your child to explore their creativity and try playing with the same toy in multiple ways. 2.) 𝗧𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 – the sounds or lights may be the only part of the toy your child focuses on. This will make it harder for them to play in other ways that promote learning. 3.) 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝘆𝘀 - especially if your kiddo struggles with sharing. Then you or a sibling can show your child new ways to play with the toy without having to take it from them.

The days of gimmicky toys are over. As I reflect on The Toy Association’s Toy Fair in New York last year and the upcoming Licensing International Licensing Expo, I expect to see a continued shift away from products that simply leverage some beloved licensed character for the sake of it. Instead, parents will increasingly seek out toys that benefit their family in a specific, creative way. Given the difficulty of our current economy, most folks are tightening their budgets. That means that a toy that merely distracts or excites a child for a few minutes isn’t really worth a parent’s time or money. Instead, families will pay attention to a toy that pledges to educate their child or improve a daily routine - like reading time or bedtime, for instance. That kind of toy pays dividends well into the future, and serves as a partner in supporting children’s early development. Parents want toys that empower them to solve a specific problem - like childrens’ overreliance on screen time - and ones that do will certainly outlast trendier toys that are only briefly played with before being discarded. As leaders in this space, we need to push past what’s obvious and easy to impress kids with, and instead challenge ourselves to create toys that address what is explicitly difficult for parents to achieve. To last in this market, this is the new standard.

My mom: "Why are you working on this?" "You didn't play with your dollhouse very much. You liked your play kitchen a lot more." I could get defensive, but she makes a good point. It's a key insight into why we need to work on this. Why? For our planet - 1. The toy industry is the most plastic-intensive industry, with more tons of plastic per million dollars of revenue than any other industry. 2. 90% of toys are made of plastic and 80% end up in landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. Meanwhile, wood toys have a much lower carbon footprint. 3. We're teaching our children that what we buy is disposable. For our customers (and thus, for our business) - 1. We've spent the last four years learning about play and keeping toys in use (we pivoted this past October from a six-figure ARR toy rental business). 2. Through surveys, we learned that imaginative play is one of the types of play families value most. But dollhouses, a staple of imaginative play, frequently don't hold attention long enough. 3. In play observations and interviews, we learned that dollhouses are typically low to the ground, closed, fixed experiences. They have one of the lowest NPS scores of play structures, at -12 on a scale from -100 to 100. For my younger self - By creating a play structure (not just for dolls, not just a house) that is more engaging, I am making something I would have loved to have. So, I'm glad we're asking "why." I'm glad my mom (and others) have asked "why." Here's Rachael Classi and I explaining our why.

Through meticulous observational studies, we gain unique insights into how children engage with toys. From the sparkle in their eyes to the laughter that fills the room, every nuance contributes to a holistic understanding of a toy's impact. The evaluation process extends beyond the parents; it encompasses the voices of the little ones who bring these toys to life.
