We believe it’s important to discuss how and if you want to contribute to your kid’s college fund. There are a lot of creative ways to approach this. 🤜You could pay a portion of their education. 🤜You could require that they apply for a certain amount of scholarships each semester. 🤜You could purchase a rental property for your child to live in for free while in college and have them manage renting out the extra rooms. 🤜They could take as many college classes as possible in high school. Many high schoolers now graduate with an associate’s degree. 🤜Look into community colleges, state schools, trade schools, internships. What creative approaches have you tried or are planning on trying to keep college costs low?

In April, I received two calls, from two different families sharing that their HBCU college students had either a job or internship in Charlotte but was unable to find housing. I tried to help find housing but couldn’t find anything under $2,000 per month. So I opened up my home and had the honor of hosting these two amazing young ladies for the summer as they learned to navigate corporate and professional spaces. As a leader and executive coach, I learned a few key take-a-ways: 1) Creating a strong and diverse talent pipeline is critical to the sustainability of an organization which must start while they’re in college. 2) If your company engages in out-of-state internships, ensure that housing is apart of the package because in most cities temporary housing is difficult to obtain. This can make the internship opportunity unattainable which ultimately can change their trajectory. 3) The Gen Z generation is totally different so their voice is critical when decisions are being made in the workplace. Almost every day I learned something new from them. 4) When placing an intern, expose them to real work, not just stapling papers because they’re ready and capable for more. Both had “real work,” which allowed me to see their growth. 5) Lean into HBCU students and be intentional because often the opportunities and exposure are not the same. This will help level the playing field and encourage diversity. 6) If you work for a major corporation or business, consider enrolling in the NC Governors HBCU Internship program which provides interns with an immersive professional experience that will increase their competitiveness in the job market. When is the right time to start thinking about applying to college if your child is a current junior/rising senior? I would say it depends on what your goals are. Reasonable goals for your child this time of year: finish out the junior year with as high a GPA as possible. Take the spring SAT with a view to retaking it in the fall if the scores do not match the required scores of the colleges your child wants to get into. Study for AP exams, aiming for a 4 or 5 (not all colleges will accept a 3.) Enjoy graduation festivities. Then: with your child, plan out the summer based on how to best augment their application. Do they need to retake the SAT? Take an SAT prep class for the new digital format. Can a family friend help out with the right summer internship that aligns with your child's goals and interests? Are essays stressing them out? Meet with Step by Step College Essay Prep to get those handled!
