Anyone who knows me can tell you I’m a big foodie. I don’t ‘eat to live’; I ‘live to eat.’ As someone deeply immersed in diverse cultures through work and travel, I've enjoyed savoring everything from San Francisco’s famous food scene to timeless dishes in remote corners of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. What I've learned from these travels and experiences is that food isn't just fuel but a universal language that transcends borders. The essence of every dish goes far beyond its ingredients. It's in the conversations, friendships, and even business deals that are forged over shared meals. Today, on World Food Day, we remember that food is about much more than just the flavors but also the diverse ceremonies that come with the dining experience. From Japan's 'itadakimasu' (I humbly receive) to Iran's 'daste shoma dard nakone,' (May your hands not hurt), these rituals remind us to pause and give thanks for the hands that prepared the meal and the universe that provided the produce. In a time when many face food insecurity, these rituals are more important than ever, and I acknowledge that being a 'foodie' is both a privilege and a luxury. So, the next time we’re in front of a plate of food, let’s remember to pause and express gratitude. Because in that pause, we’re reminded of the transformative magic of food and the privilege of having a meal to enjoy.
