It seems fitting that during our Greek summer holiday, we talk about Mentor...
In Greek mythology, Mentor is a character who appears in Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey. An old friend of Odysseus, Mentor is entrusted with the care and guidance of Odysseus' son, Telemachus, while Odysseus is away. The goddess Athena often takes the form of a Mentor to provide divine guidance and support to Telemachus.
This story isn’t about how behind every great man is a better woman. It’s about my two sons engaging with adults (Mentors) on holiday and gaining so much from them.
During our sailing and windsurfing weeks in Vassiliki with Wildwind, my boys have sailed with a diverse group of people, from teenagers to adults in their 50s, navigating everything from H-16s to FX-1 catamarans.
In fact, my 10-year-old even ditched me to team up with a 15-year-old from Rotterdam for some racing. Was I a little disappointed? Sure. But I was more delighted that he's finding his own way.
There’s a risk in letting them – especially the 10-year-old – wander down the beach and pair up with someone new for a sail. But the upside is huge: thrills and spills, and more importantly, mentorship, guidance, insight, and learning.
In this digital-first world, kids need relationships and interactions with older kids and adults. They need practical experiences and to learn from others in person.
My 14-year-old returned from an afternoon session in 25+ knots on a catamaran with a guy named Mark, exclaiming, "He’s fantastic, so skilled, and brilliant... taught me some really cool things." Followed by the inevitable, "He’s so much better than you." Isn’t that what I want for my kids? It turns out Mark is an ex-World, European, and British Champion from the '90s.
What are my takeaways?
· Kids need risk and reward, a few bruises, and big smiles.
· Learning is everywhere.
· Mentorship and guidance can come in all shapes and sizes, structured and unstructured.
· People benefit from being together.
· Quality moments and experiences come from the quantity of time.
