The report highlights five factors causing disasters and conflicts to become neglected: 💶 The impact of cultural political or economic isolation 📰 The lack of media coverage and profile 📉 Donor fatigue, inertia and the protracted crisis 🌱 The climate connection 🤝 Insufficient support for locally-led action Sweden and the EU must take a leading role in transforming the humanitarian sector by securing new funding, strengthening nexus collaborations, and promoting local ownership and leadership to ensure that no crisis remains hidden and that every affected community receives the attention and support they urgently need. 📜In an open letter to the newly elected President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, VOICE emphasised the urgency of addressing the escalating #humanitarian crises which are projected to leave 308.5 million people in need of assistance in 2024. The letter underscores the #EU's pivotal role as a leading humanitarian donor, contributing over 32% of global humanitarian funding in 2023, and highlights the need to strengthen the EU’s commitment to principled humanitarian action, and use all relevant political tools to create the environment urgently needed to address them. VOICE calls for the appointment of a Commissioner for Crisis Management and stresses the need for a coordinated approach between humanitarian, development, and peace initiatives to effectively tackle the root causes of #crises. Furthermore, the letter highlights the crucial role of civil society organisations, particularly humanitarian #NGOs, in contributing to the EU’s excellent record on humanitarian action. Humanitarian NGOs bring unparalleled expertise in navigating complex situations and ensuring aid reaches the most vulnerable communities. 🔽🔽Read and share the letter🔽🔽

Last week, IMPACT participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by the ICVA (International Council of Voluntary Agencies) that focused on humanitarian needs. Central to the discussion was the IMPACT-commissioned paper titled "How should we define and prioritise humanitarian need?" Written by Hugo Slim and published through the Norwegian Centre for Humanitarian Studies. The discussion and paper aimed to address questions guiding the humanitarian sector: What constitutes a humanitarian need? How clear is the current humanitarian sector on the definition of needs? How should we change the definition of humanitarian needs as the climate emergency intensifies? How should we prioritize between different humanitarian needs when funding is not sufficient to meet all needs? Title: Addressing the Global Humanitarian Crisis: Collaborative Efforts Needed Amidst the ongoing challenges facing our world, the humanitarian situation demands urgent attention and coordinated efforts from all stakeholders. Conflicts, natural disasters, and pandemics have left millions vulnerable and in need of assistance. Governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector must work together to provide essential support and resources to those most affected. Efforts to address the humanitarian crisis require a multifaceted approach, encompassing emergency aid, long-term development assistance, and sustainable solutions. Beyond immediate relief, investing in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment is crucial to building resilience and promoting recovery in affected communities. Collaboration among international organizations, governments, and local communities is essential to ensure effective response and coordination. By joining forces and pooling resources, we can enhance the impact of our collective efforts and reach those in the greatest need. Empathy, solidarity, and a shared commitment to humanitarian principles are imperative in navigating the complex challenges facing our world today. Together, we can make a difference and build a more inclusive and compassionate society for all. #humanitarian #humanity #NGO #GLOBAL

localization means empowering local responders in affected countries to lead and deliver humanitarian aid. It aims at strengthening the capacity and resources of local organizations to respond to crises and promote long-term sustainability but this cannot be achieved unless donors and INGOs deliberately provide support to local actors to walk through the road of graduation to its end destiny of being able to carry out programmes and projects with the utmost effectiveness and efficiency ,this is a long process that needs coordination and joint efforts
The Donor Community should speak to local and national actors directly, outside of frameworks they are funding and without going through INGO intermediaries - only then can these conversations be meaningful. As global humanitarian needs continue to spiral, the IRC is warning that the EU’s approach to humanitarian settings is not keeping pace with the new reality of escalating crises. Today the IRC is launching its campaign calling on EU leadership to #RaiseTheBar and lead with humanity. Over the coming five years, the EU needs to rethink its ways of working in humanitarian contexts and to better deliver for people caught in the crosshairs of crisis. If it fails to do so, we can expect the humanitarian picture at the next elections in 2029 to be even more dire – with millions more lives hanging in the balance. The EU must fundamentally rethink its approach to global crises or risk humanitarian needs spiralling to unprecedented highs. HNPW - Session from Global Cluster Coordination Group 7 May 2024, 14:00-15:30, Salle 2 at CICG (face-to-face session, with online connection) The humanitarian system is ever more stretched, with the highest number of conflicts since World War II, prolonged nature of crises, and effects of climate change. Humanitarian organizations are being asked to provide critical lifesaving assistance as well as to ensure that no one is left behind. System-wide initiatives such as the Independent Review of the IASC response to internal displacement and the ERC Flagship Initiative provide some clues to the changes upcoming in the way humanitarian aid is planned and delivered. In this context, the Global Cluster Coordination Group (GCCG) is organizing this session to reexamine the role of the cluster approach in a changing humanitarian landscape by: - Taking stock of ongoing system-wide changes - Identifying good examples from the field in terms of partnerships, localization, AAP and collective advocacy from clusters The session is organized by the Global Cluster Coordination Group, an IASC associated entity. All members of the humanitarian community are welcome to attend the session, including United Nations agencies, cluster coordinators, NGOs, and donors.
