Very disappointing news! The French government has decided to abandon its plans to introduce a Deposit and Return System (#DRS) for beverage plastic bottles. This decision is a significant blow to the country’s #circularity ambitions, and it raises concerns about France’s ability to achieve the #EU mandatory collection and #recycling targets.   How will France manage to build a #CircularEconomy for #BeveragePackaging if it is not taking effective measures to do it?   A DRS in France would have been a fundamental step forward towards promoting circularity of beverage packaging. As we have seen in countries with a DRS in place - from those that already implemented it more than two decades ago (Scandinavians) to those that recently set it up (Lithuania, Slovakia, and Malta) - a well-functioning DRS is instrumental in boosting collection rates of beverage packaging. It’s hard to do the topic justice so briefly, but let’s start with what it isn’t. It isn’t simple. It isn’t recycling. It isn’t even getting rid of plastic bags. In echoing the brand’s commitment to halve its emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, 𝐍𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞́ 𝐔𝐊 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 has successfully delivered a 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡-𝑜𝑓-𝑖𝑡𝑠-𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑑 rail container which facilitates 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀, to Tesco, in August this year. According to the Rail Delivery Group, each freight train has the potential to take up to 𝟳𝟲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 off the roads and one tonne of products moved by a rail journey produces 𝟳𝟲% 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 than a diesel road journey. The container has been in development for two years and the aim is to refine it for future delivery opportunities by this method to contribute to a 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮. In 2022, Nestlé announced its plans to increase freight capacity on trains as part of its commitment to reducing environmental impact. Following the success of this trial movement, Nestlé will now look to develop a strategy to expand and refine opportunities to deliver goods by this method.
