Around July 15, 2024, state officials launched a rhetorical campaign, lying that civil society organisations were financing the recent protests by young Kenyans. The youth advocated for greater accountability in using public resources and exercising public power, eradicating egregious corruption, and relief from the high cost of living exacerbated by exorbitant taxes. Civil society organisations called for accountability when police curtailed the right to protest by killing, maiming, and abducting peaceful demonstrators. In response, the Public Benefits Organizations Regulatory Authority, its chairperson Lindon Nicolas, and acting CEO Mwambu Mabongah issued a press release on July 22, 2024, lying that we were not legally registered to conduct activities benefiting the general public. They stated they had asked the DCI to investigate us. The PBO regulatory authority, Nicolas and Mabongah, sought to pressure civil society organisations into ceasing demands for accountability regarding police killings, maimings, and abductions. We refused. We moved to court to prevent these individuals from stopping our work, as we continue to hold this regime accountable and demand the right to protest be respected.
