This week marked 1 year of running Bryd with Laurence Fitch. I hadn't considered I'd be running a business, much less one that went truly global in such a small amount of time. Throughout the last week I've been reflecting on how my life has changed in the past year, what I've learnt and what I've struggled with, hopefully this post helps someone with their decision to start a business. 1️⃣ Starting a business is like solving a puzzle that is constantly changing throughout the day 🔵 When we first started we thought it would be easier than it was (we came from Slack, we knew Slack, we knew the opportunity) and in reality we were so wrong. There were so many things that we hadn't considered across business domains that we had little familiarity with like legal language and incorporating in a foreign country! 🔵 It felt like an endless wave of gaps, we had very little idea of even where to start (let alone filling them) and this all while we were constantly being hit with no's or roadblocks. 🔵 It took us quite some time to figure out how to block out the noise, effectively prioritise and more importantly how to pivot quickly to enable us to grow as a business.   2️⃣ ... but any problem can be solved and it's ok not to know everything 🔵 Starting out, personally I felt like I had to know everything at the point of being asking which in hindsight was unproductive and I probably cost us deals by letting my sense of pride get in the way. 🔵 As we grew in scale we started to lean on partners more and I can definitively say our business would not be where we are today without them. They've added several dimensions to our business and helped us deliver some seriously impressive stuff. 3️⃣ There are few things in life that are better than seeing your business grow 🔵 Personally, the first 6 months were some of the toughest that I've ever faced. I was continually questioning if I had made the right decision to start the business, whether I knew how to sell & deliver or if I knew anything that would be helpful to getting us out of the funk we were in (& for those founders who have continued reading, you know to a extent this feeling doesn't go away). 🔵 However, what I was not focusing on is how we were getting better every time we scoped, every time we pitched, every time we'd meet a new rep and so on 🔵 Before we knew it we were closing multiple deals a month, with businesses we never thought we'd be selling to and delivering the thing that we set out to do and quite honestly there's an immeasurable sense of pride attached to that Finally, thank-you Laurence Fitch. There isn't anyway else I want to be doing this with. Better late than never… Congratulations Slack on your 10 anniversary. It won’t surprise anyone on here when I say that I’m as big of an advocate for Slack as it comes. For hundreds of thousands of teams around the world it has made work just that much easier and more fun. Personally it has a profoundly positive impact on my life. Ive changed careers, worked with organisations around the world, travelled the world, learnt a tonne and most importantly made some incredible friends along the way. Laurence Fitch and I are excited to see what’s next FWIW as much as Slack has added new features, personally there is nothing better than a well-timed giphy from a colleague 😂 #slack #slackcommunity
