My latest HDT Talks Trucking interview explores a thorny question. Is hydrogen an appropriate energy source for long-haul trucks? My guest, Dr. David Cebon, says hydrogen for trucks is a non-starter. Using hydrogen to power fuel-cell trucks would offer increased range compared to batteries (at least current-generation batteries) and utilization similar to diesel-powered trucks. There are already proven, low-carbon alternatives to diesel without the downsides, but environmental regulators continue to push green hydrogen as the favored technology. Dr. Cebon's reasoning on the downsides of hydrogen will leave you with several unsettling questions.

In many ways, there is a lot of hope hanging on hydrogen in the trucking industry. Fleets are desperate for a diesel-like, zero-emission propulsion option for heavy trucks. And despite some concerns, there is widespread optimism that hydrogen could provide fleets with those capabilities burned as a liquid fuel in internal combustion engines.
