July 11, 2024, I am honored to have served as one of the speakers at the Climate Change and Education Forum 2024 alongside global experts. It was a fascinating and worthy experience, providing invaluable insights and fostering meaningful discussions on how we can collectively advance climate education and action. This forum highlighted the crucial role of education in driving sustainable change and the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Below is the summarize speech delivered. Community-based climate education initiatives are crucial for building local resilience and driving sustainable actions amid escalating climate challenges. These grassroots efforts utilize local knowledge, cultural practices, and participatory learning models to raise awareness and mobilize communities for climate action. Despite the urgent need, significant gaps remain in climate education; nearly half of national curriculums do not mention climate change, and only about a third of teachers can effectively explain its regional impacts. This underscores the critical role of community-driven programs in filling these educational voids and empowering local populations with the knowledge and skills needed for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies. The urgency for robust community-level initiatives is underscored by recent United Nations reports, highlighting both progress and setbacks in global climate action. Although 123 countries adopted national disaster risk reduction strategies by the end of 2021, global CO2 emissions surged by 6% in 2021, offsetting pandemic-related reductions. Funding remains a significant challenge, with developed nations mobilizing $83.3 billion for developing countries in 2020, falling short of the $100 billion target. Effective community-based education programs can bridge these gaps, leveraging local efforts to complement national and international initiatives, ultimately fostering a comprehensive and inclusive approach to climate resilience and sustainable development . https://lnkd.in/ehzDEQCm https://lnkd.in/ehzDEQCm
