🇦🇺 When in Australia the past two weeks, I visited a 70+ store chain well-known for its heritage and craftsmanship. They’ve even had a few press pieces lately about new services they are offering in-store. After visiting one of their Melbourne stores that had 3 staff on duty, with no customers in the store, none of the staff greeted or acknowledged me as I did a slow, full lap around the entire store. That seemed pretty surprising, so I visited another one of their stores to A/B test; I received a “Hello” with eye contact, but that was all. Zero engagement onward… These may be somewhat anecdotal, but is #retail hard? Or are standards absent? Many retailers seem to be looking for quick wins, silver bullets, but they do not exist. You can implement whatever tool you want, but if the behavior doesn’t change at the front-line it’s a waste. And it takes leadership to drive change. Yet there’s another retailer that has also made press recently, but for not ideal reasons: The Body Shop. Their Highpoint location had breathtaking service. Shout out to the Manager Johanna. An incredibly genuine greeting, breaking down of any potential resistance, thoughtful/intentional probing, and a fantastic demonstration of features, advantages, and benefits. As a retail geek, it was mind-blowing. No surprise Highpoint is one of their top stores, and Australia is the group’s most profitable region. Sounds like they have been focused on the right things...

Saddened by the news that Brooks Brothers, Ted Baker and Lucky Brand are all leaving Canada. It furthers the argument I made in this article about the challenges facing the mid market. Each of these brands are owned by Authentic Brands Group and were troubled when acquired. They were brought back on the value of the brand, which is not a path for long term success in the mid market. Mid market is all about hitting the balance between price and quality that reflects what your unique customer wants. If you can not describe your target customer, what they value about your brand, and why they chose you over others, time to call Faculty of Change.
