Why is January 26th a difficult day for mob? Sounds like a question for Ask Aunty! I'm an Aboriginal Elder from the Kimberly region on Western Australia. My life's purpose is to share my cultural knowledge and leave a legacy of Dreamtime wisdom for generations to come. In Evolve Communities cultural awareness workshops, participants are encouraged to ask any question without fear of ridicule, shame or blame - and now you can ask those questions too! And remember, there's no such thing as a silly question! 🙃 #askaunty #culturalawarenesstraining #acknowledgecountry #practicalreconciliation

One reason why we celebrate festivals and happy occasions are to create opportunities for family togetherness. Families are very important especially if all your extended family members are not in Singapore like mine. I missed not growing up surrounded by grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. Due to certain family issues, my brothers and I lost the kinship of the maternal relatives for more than 20 years. We reunited last year. The loss of family ties during our younger years can never be compensated. When families break up, the children are most affected psycologically. They loss the kinship and support of their loved ones. Their life are like uncompleted jigsaw puzzles with many missing pieces. The effects are life long and are most felt in adult life. Differences, misunderstandings and quarrels are common features in family units. The question is do you let it fester for a very long time till death or find peace. We can do that if you value the familial relationships more than our personal feelings of hurt, loss of pride and ego. Forgiveness. I think is a divine quality as it is so hard to practice. To forgive, you have to forget and let go of the past. We are often reluctant to do so. If we do practice forgiveness, the personal happiness and inner peace we experience is priceless. We have to reduce conflict and create peace in our personal, professional life, within our families, children, colleagues and friends. As I learnt from my godparents and their children, think, feel and express love and peace in every day life. #familymatters #familyfirst #peacefulresolution

Many Australians are fixated on the concept that this national day has been celebrated on January 26 since the union jack was first planted on Aboriginal land. In actual fact, the first official national 'Australia Day' was observed on 30 July 1915 to raise funds for World War I. Over the years, states and territories have held the celebration on varying dates, and it wasn't until 1994 that all states and territories across Australia landed on the national holiday It is estimated that between 1778 and 1900, the population of Aboriginal people decreased by a devastating 90%. Despite the narratives of a peaceful British settlement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people actively resisted the British from the moment they invaded this country. The resistance, however, was met with brutal and calculated massacres against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including children. Research from the University of Newcastle has found there were at least 270 state-sanctioned massacres over 140 years in an attempt to eradicate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. More information about the resistance can be accessed through the 'Fronter Wars Stories' podcast created by Gamilaraay and Kooma man Boe Spearim a podcast dedicated to truth-telling about this side of Australia that has been left out of history books. -excerpt from author Yorta Yorta woman Taneshia Atkinson #notadaytocelebrate #allypledge
