Today is a big day in the Bryan/Semark household – it is opening night of the play my husband is in in the West End – specifically the Noel Coward Theatre.
Now anyone that is really keen, might be googling what is happening at the Noel Coward right now.
And you would discover it is ‘Player Kings’ with Ian McKellan.
So, tonight we will be at a business and networking party of a different kind – one with, what we understand, lots of Hollywood celebrities.
Am I nervous – heck yeah, but I am also beyond excited!
Now what has this got to do with leading change, you might ask.
And that is simple, change can be nerve-racking and exciting (just like tonight).
Change can be stressful and scary and fun (just like tonight).
We need to approach change as an opportunity to explore and experience something different.
After all, I would gamble that a great majority of you reading this now, go on a different holiday each year for those same reasons - to do and explore and experience something different…Am I right?
So, how do we go about bringing the same approach to change from our personal lives to our professional lives?
First, we decide what type of experience we want and then set a plan to make that happen.
Can we plan for everything – no.
Can we know exactly what is going to happen at each moment – no.
But that is part of the experience and is what many times makes it exciting as well as scary.
So long as we plan what we can and have the mindset that we can manage whatever is thrown at us in the moment,
Then we will be ok.
I am just going to repeat that - the MINDSET that we can manage the unknowns.
It is when we let the unkowns paralyse us that gets us into trouble.
Everyday we wake up, there are unknowns – before we open the curtains, is it sunny (lately no, but hopefully…)
You get my point. We need to move with the unknowns not be afraid or go against them.
So, what have we done with this new, change moment in prep for tonight?
We planned our outfits over a month ago. All outfits have been cleaned and pressed,
My outfit went to the seamstress to be hemmed of course because the trousers were 6 inches too long (I know – I am short 😁)
Taxi to the tube station has been booked.
We know where we need to be and at what time.
We have made a plan on how we will get home.
And the rest – we will just have to wait and see.
