Watching the Post Office Ltd Horizon scandal unfold, one might assume it is a one-off, something that happened years ago, and the Post Office, along with Parcelforce Worldwide, has new management, and that management has put things right. My own recent experiences suggest otherwise. When senior management create a culture of blame - 'It is not our fault you don't have your parcel, it is the fault of our partner, FedEx. Call them' - and when senior management don't put the customer at the apex of everything they do, that organisation is in deep trouble. In its research, AESC asked business leaders to identify the highest impact DEI strategies in their organizations. The top three strategies are: 1. Foster a safe and inclusive environment. 2. Last week, Starbuck’s named its third CEO in less than 2.5 years. The company faced two high-profile activists, criticism from longtime CEO Howard Schultz, and slowing sales. The incumbent, Laxman Narasimhan, appointed CEO in March of 2023 had little experience in running, no less turning around, a global restaurant operation. The expectation was that Narasimhan would “mature” under Howard Schultz’s tutelage. In contrast, Brian Nicoll, Chipotle’s CEO, had turned around the company, was paid handsomely for it, and was experienced in running a global restaurant business. And to lure Nicoll to Starbuck’s, the Board named him Chairman and CEO, a smart decision that is often a requirement in recruiting a proven CEO. There is a message here. All companies seeking external leadership, especially in turnaround situations, need to hire proven CEOs. Happy #throwbackthursday! My very first unit as a leader at Allstate will always have a special place in my heart. We had a blast that day! #FireStartersBurnGoals Over the years several aspiring future leaders have picked my brain about the position. And the questions are usually the same -> What reports do you run? What metrics are the most important? What’s your schedule look like? All good questions, but I always like to lovingly interject with what I think is the most important question to ask ourselves when considering applying for a leadership position -> Why would folks want to be led by you? And most of the time it’s a curveball question, but it’s an important one that allows us to reflect on if leadership is right for us. Might be a wild idea, but I’m a believer that people skills are needed when you’re leading people. The construction paper was $1 at the dollar store, and morale/metrics that contest produced was priceless. You CAN drive results and have people like being at work, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
