When you're the pillar of your enterprise, supporting teams and stakeholders, who supports you? I hear from founders about the consistent pressure to keep the startup afloat during tough times. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I used to hate that. Now, I embrace it. And it’s led me down some pretty awesome rabbit holes… (1) A mission to help 100,000 veterans start their own businesses with my main man Kevin Seiff at The Vet Collective. & (2) Advising non-profits and mental health startups in the pursuit of eliminating suicide. MENTAL HEALTH SPOTLIGHT This June we celebrate Men’s Mental Health Month and acknowledge the contributions they have made to our society. However, we needed to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experience of men and their mental health journey. We had the privilege and opportunity to have a conversation with Cédric Chuuma who opened up about his mental health journey and experience. Cedric Chuuma is a passionate, driven, and ambitious individual who is a rising star in the business and finance industry. He specializes in business development with experience in media. He has been part of several start-ups as he loves to build and create businesses from the inside. Cedric is passionate about venture capital, private equity, and investments and is an aspiring entrepreneur. When he was faced with mental health challenges in the past he dealt with it by taking steps to educate himself on what he was experiencing because he did not understand what was happening to him. Through reading and research, he has come to understand that he has different needs as he grows and develops as a man. Cedric admits that he had experienced depression at some point in his life and that it has been a tough journey but he is always striving to get better and improve himself. Through his experience, he has come to observe that some men are experiencing breakdowns, anxiety attacks, and abusing alcohol and other substances as a way of coping, and have no understanding of what they going through. He recommends that society normalize forming networks and villages for men to help them flourish and overcome mental health challenges. Men tend to isolate themselves which creates a breeding ground for anxiety, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Studies show that entrepreneurs are twice as likely to suffer from depression and three times more likely to experience substance abuse and addiction. Last Friday, It was great to host Rick Kellar and the board and staff of Peg's Foundation! The work that they do to improve the lives of people with serious mental illness is inspiring!
