For Laura Sanjuan (She/Her), Sr. Recruiting Systems Analyst at Elastic, traveling isn't just something she does, it's part of who she is. To date, she's been to over 50 countries and counting. "I am who I am today, but I don't know who I'm going to be tomorrow," Laura shares. "Travel is part of that." As an avid traveler, Laura always dreamed of working remotely. In her job search, she discovered our Source Code tenet “01.02, /FORMAT.” Just like our products are distributed by design, our company is distributed by intention. We understand that a distributed Elastic makes for a diverse Elastic, which makes for a better Elastic. This global mindset drew Laura to Elastic from the beginning. "I meet a lot of people around the world and that gives me perspective to connect," she says. Wherever she travels, Laura always makes an effort to live like the locals, learn a bit of the language, meet new people, and give back through volunteering. "You need to adapt very quickly and embrace that things that are very easy for locals are going to be a culture shock." "There’s a difference between traveling and working, and traveling and being on holiday. It’s a different mindset," she says. Travel teaches flexibility, and Laura recommends leaning into that lesson to balance responsibilities and travel. One thing is certain, Laura will always seek a challenge. Whether it’s in her work or in her free time, she’s pushing herself to be better, connect more, and inspire others. Working on a new tech is about flexibility, innovation, and transferable skills. “Don’t be intimidated by the job description,” she says. “Go to the interview and talk about your experience, how it’s relevant, and what value you can add to the team.” It's also crucial to bring new perspectives to an emerging technology and create diverse teams. “We have fewer women in the pipeline for these jobs — we’re working to increase the number of diverse candidates. Elasticians receive 40 hours of Volunteer Time Off (VTO) annually as part of our benefits package to support the causes they care about. Here’s how some Elasticians around the world have used their VTO: ⭐ Martin Hacker, Senior Director of Sales, Public Sector, and a team of 11 Elasticians volunteered to help the unhoused community in Berlin, Germany. Martin's third annual initiative involved preparing food, distributing donations, and cleaning the Berlin main train station. ⭐ Jorge Sanz, Principal Software Engineer, spent his VTO mapping roads with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team after the earthquake in Morocco, ensuring aid reached those in need. ⭐ Julie McDowell (She/Her), VP of Global Recruiting, volunteers at a local cat café charity in Houston, Texas, providing a safe space for cats until they find their forever homes. ⭐ A group of Elasticians in India volunteered with The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world's largest NGO school meal program, to visit a government school and donate stationary and sports supplies. Through monetary contributions to The Akshaya Patra Foundation, Elasticians have donated 228,659 total meals this year!
