They released a full-page ad in leading dailies claiming they had purchased the Liberty Bell, one of the historic and iconic treasures of the US, to reduce the Nation's Debt! Taco Bell also issued a press release that compared this purchase to corporations adopting highways. It also encouraged other companies to do their bit to reduce the country's debt! This ad created an enormous outpouring of response in America, raising concern and shock! People called Taco Bell headquarters, National Park Service, Philadelphia, to ask if the Liberty Bell had been sold! By Noon, Taco Bell issued another press release stating that it was a hoax and the "Best Joke of the Day," and they committed $50,000 to the upkeep of the Liberty Bell. Thought it was a brilliant way to reinforce Taco Bell's brand image and create authentic customer engagement within the community! It is going to be talked about for years to come if we get to see the actual delivery to the winner. I’m talking live on socials, reels and TikToks, YouTube video of the delivery for posterity; we need to SEE someone get: - 1,000 wings from popeyes - 24 bars of Dove soap - 20 family sized Oreos - 720 Reese’s cups - A Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. If you can make a new product part of pop culture before it's even released, you've nailed it!   Like for many of us, my favorite Super Bowl ad was DunKings from Dunkin'. It felt authentic and hilarious at the same time to have Ben Affleck as the main character, reflecting his personal history: whether it's Good Will Hunting, Boston, Matt Damon, and of course, his love for Dunkin' Donuts! This is a true example of embracing pop culture, with references that resonate with most of the audience watching the game. Yet the brand still chooses to have its unique take on it and changes the way paparazzi usually depict the famous actor. I think everyone will remember this rapping piece forever, not just J-Lo!   I enjoyed the build-up before the commercial, with social media posts teasing Ben Affleck dreaming about a rapping career and alluding to J-Lo's upcoming record in which he will also be featured. This type of sequencing generates longer engagement around the idea. It doesn't only exist during the highest-viewed game of the year, but it benefits from the momentum long before and after, with the DunKings’ tracksuits sold out in just 19 minutes after being released! Just like Uber did with snapshots of David and Victoria Beckham reenacting the famous part of their Netflix show to prepare the actual Uber commercial. After LVMH and Saint Laurent, Starbucks is also launching a movie studio. According to Christy Cain, VP of Brand and Partnerships Marketing, Starbucks Studios will “shine a light on the stories and people who inspire us, from young, emerging artists to innovators, changemakers and others who are making a positive impact on the world.” The initiative is in partnership with Sugar23, Michael Sugar's production company. Sugar23 also spearheads The Way Upfronts, a quarterly event where brands and filmmakers can connect on sponsorship opportunities. The media x commerce convergence continues, and it makes sense: • For consumers, it's a much less annoying and more entertaining way to discover brands they're aligned with. • For brands, it can often be less expensive than running a TV commercial, not to mention the earned media—at least until (and if) this, too, becomes commonplace marketing practice. • For streaming platforms, it's a way to reduce the costs involved in original productions. That said, I wonder at what scale a move like this starts to make sense. Even though brands are becoming more comfortable with harder-to-measure top-of-funnel initiatives, producing movies and TV shows still seems like a stretch. One promising trend here is the slow but steady emergence of shoppable media—see, for example, Walmart's Add to Heart, Amazon's latest shoppable ads on Prime Video, or Pinterest's Deliciously Entertaining. Shoppable media might be just what smaller brands need to get closer to the entertainment industry, as it will allow them to demonstrate some resemblance of ROI. But the technology's not there yet—not for the average brand, at least. In other words—unless you're Starbucks (or Starbucks-adjacent), it's *probably* a little early to turn into a movie producer. 🏈 The Big Game is finally here, Happy Super Bowl Sunday! ❄️ A snow-capped vehicle traversing across the Great Plains of America in order to deliver beers to those who need it most. Sounds like a great way to advertise the cool refreshment of your product on one of the most American days in the calendar, right? The problem is, are we talking about Budweiser or Coors Light? 👯 Normally, seeing a fierce competitor release an ad eerily similar to your own would be a cause for concern. However, it's the intimate understanding of how to build and refresh your distinctive brand codes that makes Budweiser’s and Coors Light’s Super Bowl commercials so different, and so uniquely their own. 🐕🚂 While Budweiser opted for a heartfelt narrative that drew warmth and affection to the animals' journey, Coors Light was bright and energetic — viewers delighting in the Chill Train's rollicking journey commandeered by iconic rapper LL Cool J. Two ads, two distinct atmospheres, each strong in their own way. 🐴🏔️ Importantly, the two brands were able to stamp their presence on the respective executions by leveraging their uniquely ownable brand cues. Budweiser’s Clydesdales — so sorely missed last year — were an unmistakable beacon that the ad was for Budweiser. In contrast, the cold mountain peaks (famously adorned on all their products) along with the Chill Train (making its first appearance in an ad for 12 years) meant the focus on ice cold refreshment was considered quintessentially Coors. As a result, viewers were left in no doubt as to which ad belonged to who. 🍻 Ultimately, both ads delivered highly likable narratives that meaningfully differentiated their brand in their own unique way — proving there’s more than one way to crack a cold one on Super Bowl Sunday.
