'Waitr, which rebranded as ASAP in August 2022, was at one point considered a Louisiana success story. Founded in Lake Charles in 2013, Waitr was purchased by hospitality industry magnate and Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta for $308 million in May 2018, just before the company was listed on the Nasdaq. Waitr went on to essentially double its footprint later that year when it acquired Minneapolis-based Bite Squad, a move that expanded the company’s reach to more than 500 cities across 22 states.' When they close down a business after 42 years It was heartbreaking to see my usual tea shop closing down. Both sisters have been running this together for 42+ years and decided to take a break for good. This has been my usual place to go for my favourite Hot Honey Lemon, Coffee Si Siew Dai, or Hot Milo whenever I am working from the office. There has been so many short conversations and memories with these two sisters over the last 15 months. When asked why they had been doing this business for so long, they mentioned they enjoyed serving people’sfavourite drinks. When asked why they decided to close down, they mentioned they haven’t taken a break for many years except for the Chinese New Year holidays; and margins went down recently with so many new drink shops around now. When asked about what they intend to do next, they mentioned they just want to take a break for a few months, see the world, take good rest, and decide later on their next adventure. While I am sad that my favourite shop will no longer be there for my favourite drinks, I am grateful for their service and decision to take a break before they take the next big step. Entrepreneurs keep on inspiring at every stage of life. Reflecting on their journey and decision, I thought about what they could have done: 1. Add new drinks like bubble Tea, Fusion drinks to the menu that the young folks are willing to pay for and consume more of. 2. Expand the outlet to another location and diversify for future growth, step by step. 3. Move to another location where there is demand and not too much competition. 4. Train a younger generation of staff who can take the legacy forward. I shared few of these with them in recent conversations. It seems they are pondering these suggestions. SMEs have been badly hit in the last 4~5 years, despite government support. Day 3 of being a Black Story Teller: The tricky thing about online advertising is... the guidelines can change on any platform at any time. Had I launched Resilient Spirits in 2021, I would have no problem getting my ads approved to reach Black-Owned Wine & Spirit brands and their supporters. Fast forward to today, elevating Black-Owned businesses isn't technically what's "hot in the streets" for these larger platforms and VCs are being sued for attempting to even the playing field for a "specific" demographic. The reaility is that Black business owners and Black entrepreneurs across the country STILL face many unique challenges, including systemic racism, a lack of access to venture capital funds, barriers to accessing support services and networking opportunities, and inequitable access to business education. Resilient Spirits was created in observance of these obstacles... hence the name. I'm observing and learning. It's very early in my journey and I'm still in high spirits. For now I will rely on my network to spread the word that Resilient Spirits is searching for brands interested in being included in the first ever platform showcasing the largest catalog of Black-Owned Wine&Spirits for FREE!!! As always, thanks for your support! #resilientspirits #blackowned #Wine & #spirits #startup #spiritsindustry #wineindustry

To help you find and support 💥HYPERLOCAL💥 black-owned businesses here in Charlotte, AND all over the US, we pulled together a context “cheat sheet’ outlining who these companies are and why you should buy from them. National Black Business Month was established in 2004 by entrepreneurs Frederick Jordan and John William Templeton. Its purpose is to drive growth beyond traditional customers, and push the participation of community leaders, local politicians and venture capitalists. Black business owners account for only 10% of U.S. business and around 30% of all minority-owned businesses. Take a moment this month (and beyond) to learn more about what sets them apart. They (and you) will be glad you did. #blackownedbusinesses #shoplocal #hyperlocal

𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Let's end the week with a very inspiring video about the founder of Surrey Hills Grocer who bounced back from failure and now running a string of successful restaurants in Singapore. 🔥 It's a story of falling down but picking ourselves up again. 💸 It's a story that entrepreneurs can lose everything in a relatively short time despite building it for very long. 👨👩👦👦 It's about the power of having the right support. In her case, her family. But for others, the family or closed ones may not understand our struggles. Thus, finding the right community and support is so important. 🚫 Once bitten, doesn't not necessarily means twice shy. I've eaten in Surrey Hills last year thanks to May Cheng's recommendations and this year again when my friend wanted to celebrate my belated birthday with me. It's not easy running an F&B in Singapore as we are spoilt for choices and there are simply too many competition. Thus, chancing upon this interview, especially now that I am an entrepreneur myself, gives me the needed boost for the weekend ahead. I hope it spurs you on too. #NotTheUsualMentor #mentoringmatters #mentoringprogram #keephustling #nevergiveup #resilience #entrepreneurship https://lnkd.in/exP9XsHD

** Empowering Black Entrepreneurs: Pathways to Franchising Success ** Franchising offers a pathway to success for Black entrepreneurs, and we're thrilled to have played a part in making this dream a reality. The African American Chamber of Commerce for PA, NJ & DE, in collaboration with the International Franchise Association Foundation, recently co-hosted the "Pathways to Franchising: Pennsylvania" event, and the results were nothing short of inspiring! Franchising empowers entrepreneurs to achieve financial success by providing a proven business model, franchisor support, brand recognition, financing opportunities, and rapid scalability. It bridges capital shortages, mentorship gaps, and limited market access. We would like to give a special shoutout to Jovan Goldstein, Founder and Managing Partner of JT Goldstein Accountants and Business Advisors, and the African-American Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board, who moderated the Technical Resource Panel. Additionally, Kim Carter, MBA our Business Solutions Specialist, participated in the Technical Resource panel, passionately explaining our mission, who we serve, and the benefits of Chamber membership for business owners. Now, here's our call to action: Join the African American Chamber of Commerce for PA, NJ & DE, and let's work together to strengthen and support Black-owned businesses and institutions.
