Out of the list of QSRs, sadly, only Domino's so far has signed the Better Chicken Commitment in Australia. More consumers are prioritising the welfare of animals when they purchase meat, dairy, and eggs, and animal welfare labels are increasingly common to come across in supermarkets. Industry and animal welfare organisations are now advocating for similar standards for fish products. But, as was seen with meat and dairy, the actual treatment of animals may not always align with the promises made by these labels. This raises concerns that "humane-washing," where claims of ethical treatment are exaggerated or misleading, could become a problem with fish products. We recently spoke to the Weekly Times about the need to reform our broken animal welfare system. Improving national animal welfare standards in Australia has stalled, and the animals are the ones who are left to suffer. In 2005, a review of the national model codes of practice for nine livestock animals recommended a new series of animal welfare standards and guidelines. Yet, very little has changed. In some cases, it has taken ten years for new standards to go through the review, development and implementation process, and when they are finally implemented, they're out of date. The system is broken, and animals deserve better. That is why we are calling for a #FairGoForAnimals. Australia’s animal protection sector has published an open letter calling on the Albanese Government to fund the phase out of live sheep export in the upcoming Federal Budget and to legislate the trade’s end date. We know that a phase out of live sheep export is the only way forward. This trade, which has seen disaster after disaster, is simply unfixable. The animal welfare issues are cumulative and inherent, and cannot be adequately addressed by regulation. The majority of Australians support a phase out. It's time for the Government to take action. Ontario has taken a significant step in animal welfare by introducing the Preventing Unethical Puppy Sales Act (PUPS Act). This legislation aims to ban various breeding practices associated with industrial dog-selling operations. The province is also the first to introduce minimum penalties specific to puppy mills.
