ICYMI - "Rebuilding Scapa Flow ‘can help Nato defend North Atlantic’", SNP Defence Spokesperson, The Times, 13/1/24 https://lnkd.in/eFzKZD98 is behind a £wall I suspect but in essence the article reflects SNP defence spokesman, Martin Docherty-Hughes', proposal to re-establish a naval base in Scapa Flow, to enhance NATO's capabilities in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. Docherty-Hughes argues that the current UK focus on the Channel is a "Napoleonic-era hangover," and that an independent Scotland should prioritise defending the gap between its own coast, Iceland, the North Sea, and the new Arctic, ice-free route. He believes that Scapa Flow, the RN's principal WW1/WW2 home base, strategically aligns with these areas. What is less clear - in the article at any rate - is how many warships an independent Scotland would have to deploy to the Orkneys and how enthusiastically young men and women of a Scottish Navy might view a posting there. For additional background on possible SNP defence policy, Docherty-Hughes has contributed two interesting, full essays in https://lnkd.in/e8Kktg8G from which this Scapa Flow angle has been plucked. #snp #geopolitics #uk #maritimesecurity #defencepolicy #generalelection

'Despite the increased investment over the decade, the alarming fact is that for the next 10 years Australia will have the least capable naval surface fleet it has had in more than 50 years. 'Instead of the 16-20 surface combatants, Australia has 11. Before the fleet size increases in the early 2030s, it will substantially decrease. 'To maximise our diminishing naval assets, we should take a leaf out of the playbook of our AUKUS partners by permanently forward deploying one of the remaining surface combatants to South-East Asia. 'Basing a frigate in Singapore or the Philippines would increase Australia’s presence in the contested South China Sea, maximising the potency of Australia’s naval capability during the foreseeable capability gap'. https://lnkd.in/gsKtWhqr

🌊 🔗: https://lnkd.in/ex5mmD8E ❓What was Operation "Peking"? ❓What is the exact composition of the #PolishNavy? ❓What are the characteristics of naval warfare in the Baltic? With #Sweden and #Finland joining the Alliance, the #BalticSea is now often referred to as #NATO's internal sea. Despite this development, the threat from Russia at sea has not entirely vanished. The Polish coast keeps evolving rapidly 🚢 so its significance for the entire country will only increase. Jan Starosta, Head of the Project Office 🟨 INE, writes about how to defend our maritime territories. 💬"In the face of the growing threat of war with Russia, the strategic importance of the Baltic Sea and Polish ports is increasing. They are places suited well for the delivery of supplies and equipment as well as the unloading of heavy allied forces that cannot be transported by air." 💬"The cheapest way to increase the security of Polish interests in the Baltic would be to possess the air defense frigates and submarines currently being built (under the Miecznik program and the Orka program). These will relieve the air defense squadrons, multi-role aircraft, and motorized battalions needed on the land theater of operations." 💬"The Polish Navy will have to operate in an environment where there is no clear distinction between war and peace. Its main weapon will be the ability to deter and project power. An interesting example is the situation from the September Campaign. Simply having submarines – regardless of their use – caused Germany to avoid risking large ships entering the Gulf of Gdańsk." 🟨 Institute of New Europe
