The #chemicalindustry must ‘defossilize’ to reduce carbon emissions, according to a report published recently by The Royal Society. But first, let's understand the difference between decarbonization and defossilization... In the context of the chemical industry, decarbonization refers to reducing emissions through measures such as #electrification and improved efficiency of energy-intensive emissions. The chemical sector, however, cannot fully decarbonize, as it requires carbon as an essential element to produce chemicals. #Defossilisation refers to replacing fossil-derived feedstocks with alternative, non-fossil sources of carbon. The newly published policy briefing explores the potential to replace #fossil feedstocks used in making #chemicals with alternative carbon sources. The alternative feedstocks explored in this briefing are: - #biomass, - #plasticwaste, and - carbon dioxide (#CO2 ). These can act as sources of carbon required for primary chemical building blocks, further intermediate chemicals, and ultimately downstream consumer products. These alternative starting materials have the potential to reduce the chemical industry’s #greenhousegas emissions. Our contribution to the EU transition pathway for the chemical industry 🌱 In January 2023, the European Commission published the Chemical Industry Transition Pathway, an action plan developed together with EU countries, industry representatives, NGOs and other stakeholders. This pathway outlines necessary measures and conditions for the green and digital transition of the chemical industry. 🏭 As the fourth largest industrial sector in the EU, the chemical industry is central to Europe's economic transition, involved in 95% of all products and therefore in major value chains. In addition, the chemical industry is one of the largest CO2 emitters in the EU. ♻ The European Commission has prepared a database of more than 150 actions, grouped under 26 themes, which are to be implemented by the stakeholders concerned within an agreed timeframe. Carbon Minds has been included for our cm.chemicals database. 📊 We were included under the category „Deployment of Digital Technologies “, because our cm.chemicals database leverages a third-party ISO certified methodology to provide the world’s largest life cycle assessment database for chemicals and plastics. So far, pyrolysis and gasification are the only two chemical recycling pathways described to work for mixed plastic waste streams. There is a third way – cracking. A solid waste cracker operates at temperatures between a pyrolysis reactor and a gasifier and produces a product gas that is rich in C2 to C7 molecules, very similar to a Naphtha steam cracker furnace. It therefore enables a significantly shorter recycling loop than pyrolysis and gasification to produce the targeted circular monomers, avoiding additional reaction steps and the associated plastic-to-plastic yield losses. Operating at the “just right” temperature also ensures that unwanted heteroatoms present in the waste like O, N, S, and Cl end up predominantly in small molecules, that can be separated from the circular monomer streams using industry-proven gas-cleaning technologies.
