Did you know? East Africa is facing critical challenges due to frequent food and water shortages. People don't talk about food and water security. These two phenomenal are highly affected by environmental degradation and climate change. Today, it's estimated 111 million people in the region - over a third of the entire population - are living in poverty, with environmental degradation worsening the situation. The double whammy of poverty and a harsh environment, in turn, creates a feedback loop. Poor farmers have little choice but to wrest a living from marginal lands with poor tools, which often results in further environmental degradation If we are not careful we will have a largest population in Africa that suffer from hunger and lack of safe drinking water. And most of the vulnerable in this crisis will be children and young people. By taking a livelihoods-based approach, we can understand the intricate links between environmental degradation, food security, and poverty, paving the way for sustainable solutions. It's imperative now to foster stronger cross-border collaboration among East African nations to combat transboundary environmental issues, such as water pollution, wildlife conservation, and climate adaptation and mitigation. 🌍 ♀️ Cyclone Freddy's Impact in Malawi: A Call to Action for Gender-Sensitive Climate Solutions 🌀The aftermath of Cyclone Freddy in Malawi underscores a critical yet often overlooked aspect of climate disasters: the disproportionate impact on women and girls. This cyclone, noted for its unprecedented duration, has not only ravaged the land but also the lives of many women, pushing some into dire situations for survival. 🌾 With women making up 70% of Malawi's agricultural workforce, the destruction of farmlands has drastically affected their ability to provide and maintain household food security. Communities in #KaseseDistrict, just like any other vulnerable community in Uganda, and in fact, African developing countries continue to be confronted by #Climate Change Impact. In Kasese, especially lowlands, we have faced, seen, felt and lived with impacts of #ClimateChane. #Floods and other hazards such as mud and landslides have continued to hit people and their livelihoods hardly and push them to the walls. In the picture, this is my neighborhood where a water source was destroyed by floods and people are now struggling to find water! #Water sources that support life are destroyed, #Infrastructures such as bridges, culverts, houses forced to collapse, roads damaged, crops and other livelihoods damaged. The advance effect or the post-mortem is very unbearable (look at the photo I have just shared here). This is very unfortunate because many children, women, men (elderly) and youth as well well as People With Disabilities (PWDs) are made more vulnerable. In my own opinion, we should change the talk and give priority to some interventions such as Climate Risk Vulnerability Assessment (#CRVA), #ClimateProofing, #EarlyWrningSystems among others. This is will somehow reduce the impact of climate change. In an effort to respond, to adapt/mitigate and to build resilience of communities to these natural calamities, through a program dubbed as "Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility" #LoCAL in the district, under United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), supporting districts to adapt to impacts of Climate change using a mechanism named as Performance Based Climate Resilient Grant #PBCRG, we strongly believe that one day people who are directly affected will smile again after a high level of adaptation has been achieved.

This week, #YALI4OurFuture 2024, Empowering Communities, Sustaining Our Environment, is bringing awareness to how climate change is affecting Africa’s agriculture industry and its subsequent impacts to food security. As temperatures continue to rise globally, evapotranspiration from plants and soils accelerate, reducing the amount of water available for crops to thrive. Climate change also increasingly threatens agricultural production through extreme events like floods and severe storms, heat stress, and increased prevalence of pests and crop diseases. Without action, crop yields will be reduced and more people will fall into poverty, especially in parts of the world that are already food-insecure. For example, the World Bank estimates that 43 million people in Africa alone could fall below the poverty line by 2030 as a result of inaction.
