In a remarkable sea rescue incident, a fishing boat capsized in the Indian Ocean approximately 90 nautical miles from Sabang. The crew, consisting of three Indonesian fishermen, faced a harrowing 14 days at sea before finally being saved by Tanker Marshall Islands flag "SC Gold Ocean" with all crew members also Indonesian nationals.
The three survivors are Jack Bowie (30), Bay Haki (34) & Rinal Junaidi (46).
Despite encountering several passing vessels during their ordeal, the fishermen received no assistance until SC Gold Ocean, owned by Soechi Lines Tbk (Indonesia) SOECHI GROUP, came to their rescue. Following the successful rescue operation, the survivors were handed over to the nearest Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency BASARNAS for further assistance.
The SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention, in particular, Regulation 33, addresses the obligation for ships to render assistance to any person found at sea in distress.
SOLAS Regulation 33 - Distress Situations:
1. General Obligation:
Every master of a ship at sea, which is in a position to be able to provide assistance, is obligated to do so to any person found at sea in danger of being lost, in order to save lives.
2. Obligation to Inform Relevant Authorities:
The master must also inform the relevant search and rescue service or other relevant authorities if the ship, in the course of its voyage, encounters a shipwreck, a distressed person, or any other situation where assistance may be required.
3. Protection of Persons Rendering Assistance:
Persons who have provided assistance to those in distress at sea should be safeguarded against any adverse consequences that may arise from their action.
SOLAS Regulation 33 underscores the humanitarian duty of ships to provide assistance to individuals in distress at sea. It emphasizes the importance of preserving human life and encourages communication with appropriate authorities to ensure coordinated and effective search and rescue operations.
It's crucial for ships and their crews to be aware of and adhere to SOLAS regulations to contribute to the safety of maritime activities and promote a collective commitment to the well-being of those at sea.
