Remotely paranoid? 😮💨 You know that feeling when Slack is a little too quiet, but the team isn't up for yet another video call? Working well together is about being comfortable communicating in a low stakes way. 😎 That was the inspiration for Conveer, a Slack integration that poses questions for the whole team to answer together. Even better, your team can create their own questions. It’s a great way to build community asynchronously--plus, it’s free. Give it a try!

Slack and Fb groups are just fine for your community... right?? No - just ask Dave Gerhardt. We 10x'd the value of his community after leaving Facebook. 👎 Social media platforms are not community platforms. 👎 Slack is not a community platform (it's a team collaboration tool). Communities serve multiple purposes 📚 Learning (Courses, workshops, resources) 🤝 Connecting (Live events, DMs, sub groups) 💪 Taking action (Getting feedback, support, sharing updates) Whenever you're trying to learn a new skill, which environment is better? 📢 Loud, noisy environment 🗣 Surrounded by random people doing different things 😩 Constant interruptions, ads and notifications OR 🧘♀️ Calm, peaceful, simple, organized space 🎓 Surrounded by people doing the exact same thing you are 💆♂️ Focused, distraction free & interruption free I think we all know the answer 😉 --------- ♻ Moved off of Fb/Slack and saw an improvement? One of my friends is building a new community and asking me questions around “Why Slack?” So I thought instead of answering them myself, why don’t I collect the responses from the wonderful community builders who have built their community on Slack! Can anyone here answer any (or many) of these questions? I'll use your answers to create a mega gargantuan playbook on using Slack as a community platform and I'll publish it on the Beginner Maps blog (giving you credit for your answer, ofcourse). Goal is to build the most epic, comprehensive playbook for building Slack community in collaboration with Kourosh and Waves. Find the link to answer questions directly in the Google doc below. Also tag anyone who has built community on Slack. ❤️

Managing an online community? The right platform is key! We've compared Discord and Slack on our blog to help you decide which fits your community best. 🌟 🔍 Slack offers a structured setup, ideal for professional, organized communication. It's great for businesses seeking efficiency and order in their interactions. 🎉 Discord provides a relaxed atmosphere, suitable for casual chats and engaging larger groups, making it a favourite for more informal communities. Curious for more details? Head to our blog for a comprehensive look at these platforms and find the one that suits your community's needs. https://lnkd.in/eUxSecF6

Every open-source founder/maintainer faces the same decision: 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱. It is usually where your audience is. From what I talked to founders and personal use. 1. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 - Discord. 2. 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲/𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - Slack. But I feel most people will migrate to Discord over the years. I think the main reason is that Discord's free tier is better than Slack's free tier. Slack's free tier has a limited amount of message history - that's a problem because you lose all your support tickets from the past, which means you need to answer the same question repeatedly. Also, Slack's cheapest plan costs $7.25 per person per month. So, a community like Novu has more than 3000 people inside. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 $𝟮𝟭,𝟳𝟱𝟬 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸. How much does it cost in Discord? Nada. I also see a shift in moving the team to Discord. I still see people having Slack for internal stuff and Discord for the community. There's no reason for that. Discord works great with permission and fits the "core" area. It removes the necessary channels and lets you efficiently delegate between public tickets to the core area.

When launching a Slack community, keep your channels lean (1-3 ideally). Then, as the community grows, add new channels based on demand. Setting up too many channels can cause overwhelm for new members, as you don’t yet know what people want. TimeOS understand this.

Is anyone aware of a Slack app to help moderate communities? Slack provides ZERO moderation features, which makes communities like Superpath an easy target for spammers. It's been an issue for a long time. At the moment, we rely mostly on members to report spam which we handle promptly. Ideally though, our members wouldn't get harassed by DMs asking for link swaps, wire transfers, etc. in the first place! Specifically, I'm looking for ways to limit the number of DMs new members can send, and a way for any member to quickly flag a bad post.
