🏍️ Our employees love having dedicated motorcycle parking at City Hall! Several staff members choose to commute on two wheels because it’s fun and eco-friendly. #Work4Westy

The cheapest way to park the car is to avoid using a car and picking up public transport or a bicycle. Otherwise, the parking process can be challenging, and prices hurt. In the Netherlands, it is generally tradition not to park a vehicle at the destination point during home-work commutes. I see many people who live outside Amsterdam and work within the city divide their trip during their home-work journey into two parts. The first part covers approximately 50-80% of the distance covered by car, and the second part is covered by public transport. Free parking places are usually chosen in the middle of this commute pattern. If many people choose this method, it seems more or less efficient. However, how much are you ready to pay for free parking? The debate question is not only about the price of public transport, which you must also pay for the final part of the home-work journey and for returning to your vehicle at the end of the day. But also about the time that can be saved or spent during these sequences: driving, parking, public transport, and return. Everybody decides on their own. In some cases, a suitable solution can be unexpected. For example, public parking within 10-minute walking distance of my office is four times cheaper than underground parking in the office building. #publicTransportation #parkingDebate #cityCommuting #parkingSolutions #transportChoices

Car parking...you have to pay (and I don't have a problem with that). I drive my car every day. Whether its taking my daughter to school, business meetings, going to get the groceries or weekend camp with my Scouts. All things that would be difficult / impossible to do by using public transport...or on a bicycle. Due to the nature of my particular businesses, as a business owner and consultant...I work and meet people in a wide variety of places, multiple times each day. I don't have a fixed office or meeting place (although I have my favourites...I'll come to that in a minute). On any given day, I could have a meeting in the city center (although I go out of my way to avoid this), my favourite Cafe (Cafe 218 on Moorhouse Ave...with ample FREE parking, a great before 9:00am breakfast and wonderful coffee and service), or possibly Rolleston. Where possible, I prefer to meet outside of the central city and car parking is always a consideration. When I am forced to meet in the City...I don't mind paying for parking in a building (I find the charges to be fair and reasonable...with the exception of Wilson Parking...which I will purposefully avoid on principle), and even on-street parking...with the exception of several city streets...most particularly St Asaph St, which is now simply DANGEROUS. The addition of Cycleways throughout the city make it difficult to park on many streets, forcing me to look for alternative locations (which I guess is part of the reason why they have designed them this way). Recently, I posted about having to pay $22 per hour for a car park in Fort St in Auckland. Again, I don't mind paying for parking, and believe that users need to pay for the services they require. However, what this story (any my own experiences) tells me, is that (despite the deliberate attempts from many in the Council and other groups to reduce vehicle travel) there is still a significant number of people who continue to use cars. Banning cars is not an option...we need to find accommodating measures to provide services and facilities...even if it means paying an increased price.

Excited to see the growing interest in starting carpool programs at companies! With rising fuel costs and a focus on sustainability, carpooling is a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to commute. Many companies are implementing carpool programs at their organization to help employees with their commute. Employees’ work commutes remain one of the top issues for employee turnover. Below is a video of our Midwest Express employees talking about why they enjoy the Gohio Commute Carpool program. If you would like to learn how to start a sustainable commuting program at your place of employment, please contact the Gohio Commute team at Gohio@morpc.org. #carpool #sustainability #commutebetter, #GohioCommute
