Despite some improvements in food assistance during April and May, the Gaza Strip remains at severe risk of famine. According to the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) backed TheIPCinfo report, 96% of Gaza’s 2.2 million people face high levels of acute food insecurity, with 22% experiencing catastrophic conditions. Efforts in the past months have helped avert a worst-case scenario, but the situation remains dire and demands continuous attention and support. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dzRNDCXH #FoodSecurity

The Gaza Strip continues to face catastrophic food insecurity with a high risk of famine, according to the latest assessment of the Famine Review Committee of the The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). The IPC reports that 96% of Gaza’s population of 2.2 million people face high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 4) through September, while 22%, over 495,000 people, face catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 5). Rob Vos, Sara Judith Gustafson, Sediqa Zaki, and Brendan Rice summarize IPC findings and discuss the rapidly changing conditions in Gaza that urgently require continuous real-time monitoring of food crisis and famine risks: https://lnkd.in/eTv5Q9ua CGIAR

In April 2024, the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC), an alliance of humanitarian and development actors including the EU, released the Global Report on Food Crises. The EU also plays a key role since it is one of the founding members of the alliance and through the JRC it supports the report in multiple ways. This comprehensive document analyzes acute #foodinsecurity at global, regional, and country levels. #Conflicts have been identified as the primary driver of acute food insecurity, spotlighting significant crises in Sudan and Gaza. Besides from this, the report also highlights the increasing threats from extreme weather events driven by El Niño, and economic shocks like inflation and volatile food prices, all of which darken the 2024 outlook. To make an example, as of March 2024, annual food inflation ranged from 38–103 percent in Nigeria, Malawi, Palestine, Zimbabwe, and Lebanon. 685,000 people in Gaza — more than half of the population — were facing “catastrophic” levels of acute food insecurity or famine-like conditions by early March 2024. Check the commentary 👇 to understand the man-made conditions that have led to this catastrophe and what are the important lessons that we can deduce from the crisis in Gaza for research on famine prevention and food security in conflict-affected contexts. "It is hard to imagine any attenuation of the situation without an immediate, lasting ceasefire that enables minimally adequate provisions of food, water, energy, medicines and sanitation and hygiene supplies." 📍 https://lnkd.in/e6pwfzZ6

Israel-Hamas war: FAO, food crisis in Gaza at catastrophic levels. According to the Food Security Information Network's Global Food Crisis Report 2024, the population of the Gaza Strip, with its 2.2 million inhabitants, constitutes the most serious food crisis in the history of the food security scale. As of December 2023, over a quarter of the population, or 600 thousand people, are in 'Catastrophe' conditions (level 5 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) and at risk of famine. Estimates speak of almost a third of children in a state of acute malnutrition. Children and women are the first to suffer from food crises. Emergency agricultural aid is a critical part of the solution to acute food insecurity, with the potential to save lives and livelihoods. But an important element in this story, explained by Rein Paulsen, is the determinant factor of timing for planting crops. June will be soon upon us, when the Sudanese farmers must plant crops to have food to harvest in the fall. Please watch this FAO video to learn more 👇
Sudan is facing one of the worst food crises in the world with almost 18 million people suffering acute food insecurity. FAO's Rein Paulsen was in the country recently. Watch as he explains why urgent funding is critical to help millions of farmers produce food. #AgricultureCan #WithSudan

Pretty bleak, catastrophic and sad figures coming from the Global Report on Food Crises. The figures for 2023 are harrowing: nearly 282 million people in 59 countries suffered from acute hunger. #Gaza #Sudan #Ukraine top focus of concern. New, escalating and protracted conflicts, extreme climatic events and economic shocks led to increasing numbers of people forced to flee their homes in 2023. One can only imagine what next year's report will say about 2024. #GRFC24 https://lnkd.in/deKwez5V

Acute food security is measured on a widely accepted 5-stage classification. It increases in severity from “minimal” through “stressed”, “crisis”, “emergency” and “famine”. This scale is intended to help governments and other humanitarian actors quickly understand a situation and take action. Sudan’s food security has dramatically worsened due to ongoing conflict and economic decline. As of mid-2024, over 20.3 million people (more than 42% of the population) are facing high levels of acute food insecurity. Some are in the crisis stage. Others have slipped into the emergency phase. This indicates severe food shortages and widespread hunger. Oliver Kiptoo Kirui explains what is the food security situation in Sudan and what were Sudan’s food vulnerabilities before the war. "We can't find any food or water and the situation is very difficult. The children wish they could eat a tomato, there are no eggs, they lack calcium and are undernourished" Displaced Palestinian mother taking refuge at the Kuwait school in Beit Lahia, in the north of the Gaza Strip, battles hunger. Around 96% of the Gaza Strip's population, or 2.1 5m people, face high levels of acute food insecurity through September 2024", a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) shows. While the entirety of Gaza's territory is classified as an emergency (IPC Phase 4), over 495,000 people, or 22% of the population, are still facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 5)" The IPC says that this phase means that households face "an extreme lack of food, starvation, and exhaustion of coping capacities" As land crossings are shut down and lsrael continues its assault on Gaza, very little food and aid is reaching the Palestinian population, particularly in the north.
