Even Picasso started by copying others. All the greatest artists started by copying the masters before them—like Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo. You wouldn't recognize Picasso's early work. He painted landscapes in a traditional style that looked indistinguishable from others. But legendary artists became great when they developed their own style. They inspired each other, learned from each other, and often helped each other. I see the same phenomenon in thought leadership today, especially on LinkedIn. I write about careers and the future of work, surrounded by others who share similar topics. Many began by quoting legends like: • Peter Drucker • Adam Grant • Simon Sinek Over time, each has developed their own "artistic style," whether it’s: • Quiet leadership • Burnout • Or a unique mix of career-related topics It’s exciting to watch and learn from my peers. (We need a new word for these relationships!) The “artistic style” I’m working on is called Career Humanism. I’m going to “paint” posts about: • Human potential • Human fulfillment • Human inspiration • Human connections • Human collaboration • And many others This is my form of self-expression, my lens on the world. Does Career Humanism resonate with you? What does it mean to you?
That's so amazing Alina Okun! It's true that in the initial stage, everyone is made to copy in order to learn the basics. But as we go ahead, we develop our own style, choices, tastes and paint the world with your uniqueness. Looking forward to see your posts on Career Humanism :)
When I was first learning to paint, my teacher's advice was to mimic to learn the technique and the foundational skills. Once you've got those nailed, you can start to improvise.
None of us start out as experts. Watch, learn, test, learn. It's also a reminder that you never know who you are inspiring.
To innovate = Introduce something new to something established. Greta work Alina Okun
Your form expression is supportive, positive and inspiring. I'm here for it and can't wait to see how you develop it over time Alina.
I actually did not know that about picasso!! AND I LOVE how you weaved in art and artistry here to drive home the point that we often start by mimicking or taking inspo from others - KEEP PAINTING - your voice is SO unique and intelligent and I just love every post because you deliver it with such intelligence Alina Okun
Finding role models is so important. Copy the good stuff. Make it better.
We weave our own canvas basis our experience and those of others!
We all learn from each other and many times there is no need to reinvent the wheel, thanks for sharing Alina Okun

2moGreat post! It is ultimately the idea of Tradition. By studying the patterns of past masters, we absorb until we are able to make the forms live again by injecting new originality when we find our own better version or voice, after much practice and “recitation.” Style incorporates the past and evolves beyond the training wheels. I like the title “Career Humanism,” too! There has to be an element beyond the economy as destiny, dominated by the market and rat race, that is emphasized within a greater human community.
