U.S.-listed Chinese electric car companies are spending more on research as a ratio to sales than Tesla, according to CNBC analysis of the four automakers’ first-quarter earnings. It’s a strategy for survival in China’s cutthroat auto market, the largest in the world. Wanna know something exciting about EVs?? Yess?? 😀 Ok here goes : In Chicago, owners of Tesla, the cradle and the car that sets the bar for other EVs, have been facing a lot of trouble in simply charging their vehicles. Some have had to abandon their dead cars, creating charging station areas that have become known as “Tesla graveyards.” ! 😄 Drivers are sitting in queues for hours to juice up their EVs. Why? Coz it takes much longer to charge a battery in lower temps. Obviously EVs don’t handle the cold very well. To be fair, petrol cars don’t, either, but the effects are worse on EVs. The American Automobile Association has said that abnormally low temps can cut EV battery life by as much as half. Further, heating the car also drains the battery. 😐 But a different side of the story is unfolding in Norway, where 1-in-4 cars is electric and winter temps stay below freezing, this isn’t a problem. So what are they doing different? Well, the Scandinavians are prepared for it - Norway has better charging infrastructure, and drivers are generally better at “preconditioning,” or warming up, their cars before a charge, which makes the process more efficient. So basically, a combination of aware drivers (or as I am inclined to call them, tongue firmly in cheek - "chargers" 😄) and more advanced infra. Hybrid vehicles give greater flexibility to automakers and better performance to consumers.

Out of the 110,000 vehicles sold in Australia in September 2023, 10.6% came with a plug. Approximately 8% of these (8,821 units sold) were battery electric and 2% (1,264 units sold) were plugin hybrid EVs.

Supercharger discussion that needs wide orientation. It’s good that Tesla puts this out there in article however it needs to be publicized widely because it’s an issue. “We designed the Supercharger network to enable a seamless, enjoyable road trip experience. Therefore, we’ve heard you and understand that it can be frustrating to arrive at a station only to discover fully charged vehicles occupying spaces. We envision a future where vehicles move themselves once fully charged, enhancing network efficiency and the customer experience even further. Until then, we ask that vehicles be moved from the Supercharger once charged. A customer would never leave a vehicle parked by the pump at a gas station and the same thinking applies with Superchargers”. #tesla #superchargers
