Are you a parent or carer who has a child not knowing what they want to do? Are you struggling in finding them a path that suits their career goals? Then here are some tips for you...Nicola Hall, who is the Director of Education at the Careers & Enterprise Company, she recently shared her 5 top tips for parents and carers who are supporting their child to explore apprenticeships and other options...👇 1. Be open-minded and prepared to explore a range of options with your child. You may be really surprised at what you find out. Try to put to one side your preconceptions of what you think is best, and be open to look at everything. 2. Think twice - Technical or Academic? There is no one better route, but there are many quality options available within both. It's important to explore all of the options that are available. 3. Think about your child's preferred learning style It doesn't matter what their ability level is, but thinking about their learning style may help you to think about the appropriate options to explore further. 4. Use the support available to you Don't be afraid to ask your child's school or college for support. They have a responsibility to help your child to prepare for their next level of transition. 5. During National Apprenticeship Week, we've been highlighting some stories from MPFT colleagues who are completing or have recently completed an apprenticeship. Mark started his degree level apprenticeship in January 2021 while working as a Social Care Assessor. Following the successful completion of this, he's now a social worker and took some time to reflect on the experience and his achievements. HOW DID YOU FIND THE EXPERIENCE? When I first started the degree I just wanted to pass it and would have been happy with a third, but as the degree progressed and my marks were better than I expected, I started to aim for a 2:1 – which I was awarded when the grades were released. I was quite proud of myself for achieving something that years ago I thought I wasn’t capable of. HOW DID IT HELP YOUR PRACTICE? I learnt so many more theories through the course that made it much easier for me to understand how to best go about assessments in a way that puts the needs of the individuals more at the heart. Being reflective takes practices and I struggled in the beginning, but then things started to slot into place and it now helps me to really challenge myself and my own ‘lens’ when I’m carrying out assessments, which is such a good thing for the client. ANY LASTING IMPACTS OF DOING THE APPRENTICESHIP? As well as being much better at what I do, my confidence really is improved – I speak up a lot more and really feel confident when speaking to clients. WOULD YOU RECCOMEND IT TO ANYBODY ELSE? I would urge anyone who is thinking about a career in social work to apply for the degree, it will build on the knowledge you already have and it will give you more confidence not only in your day job but in your personal life too. EMPLOYER TUESDAY #NAW2024 Taking on and developing apprentices is part of our DNA and is an important aspect of our continued development as a practice. Apprentices at OSG gain a wealth of experience working with different members of the team who have a diverse range of knowledge, skills and experience. Equally, we benefit as a practice with new apprentices freeing up more skilled members of the team to work on more complex tasks along with providing leadership opportunities for our developing team. The apprenticeship scheme is funded by the government and our apprentices access formal training one day a week with the rest of the week spent ‘learning on the job’ with us. The onboarding and enrolment process is relatively straightforward with all the steps laid out on the Apprenticeships website. It’s a WIN WIN! #NAW2024 #apprenticeships #employertips #skillsforlife

Finley Vile is on her degree Apprenticeship, Danielle Watters is in gateway and only has her final interview to go the week after #NAW, Holly Wheaton is about to go into gateway (she is submitting her portfolio on the first day of NAW), Alex Anderson is at the start of his Apprenticeship and Daniyel O’Meara is going to start his degree Apprenticeship in September. I am also hoping to be able to start my L7 in Sept... if I can. I had a theory... we believe in Apprenticeships... so let's live it.. it's one of the values here at FE News.. talk is cheap... By thy fruit you shall be known and all that! So for the team... this is massive week. Bonkers busy... but also they are really up for it.. as they all know the massive value of Apprenticeships from an Apprentice perspective, me from a SME owner perspective. So bring on #NAW2024 ... #NAW2024 National Apprenticeship Week. It’s important that we consider the growth and development of all ages, gender, culture or family circumstances. Apprenticeship programs can be for any age group and can help to build talent and human capital within an organisation. Social and global mobility possibilities for individual employees and for companies. I am honoured to learn that my journey in the property industry so far can be a source of inspiration, especially for those who are considering to take a step in this direction like the recent school leaver(s) who might be considering what step they should take next. According to the ‘Apprenticeship Statistics for England’ on Tuesday 23rd Jan 2024, it was published that ‘48% of the apprenticeships started in 2022/23 were by people aged 25 and over, while 23% were aged under 19 and 29% were aged between 19 and 24”. This suggets that there is room for the apprenticeship route to be further discovered by young people across England and for the property industry to grow in its younger demographics. Overall, I am confident that journeys like mine (when highlighted) across the industry, will prove to be a catalyst in causing the statistics for “apprenticeship starts” to grow in 2024 and beyond! If I may…I would also encourage employers in the property industry (who have capacity) to take on board apprentices. This will not only help grow apprenticeship stats and create a pathway/career for the individual, but it will also create a culture for other employee’s to feel inspired and see the significance in obtaining qualifications across your organisation. And what better a time, than now, when there is rapid change evolving in the property management sector around competence. For example, The Property Institute has already welcomed a proposed amendment to the draft Leasehold and Freehold Reform Bill for the regulation of property agents across much of the sector to drive up standards and protect consumers further… The way the Chief Executive of The Property Institute, (Andrew Bulmer) said it: “Competence must be assured for all residents and cannot be a lottery any longer...” If housing employers can bear this in mind when considering to employ apprentices in this next course, it will be a benefit to them.
