“How Indian banks should be run?” “Just like the banks of South Canara!” Yes! South Canara is “a pilgrimage of banking.” Explained in the book: History of Private Banking in South Canara. Authored by my friend and economist Amol Agrawal. What is common between Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank, Canara Bank, Vijaya Bank, and Karnataka Bank? They originated from the South Canara region during 1900–1930. This was a contrarian thing then as major banks came from 4 metro cities. South Canara comprised the towns of Kasaragod, Udupi and adjacent villages, with the capital in Mangalore. The banks in the region implemented financial inclusion during the 1920s. Did you Know?   The "Bank of Hindostan" is considered the first ever bank of India. Customer Centricity - A Missing Link in Private Sector Last week, I inquired about the final dividend payout for FY 2023-24 from Reliance Industries, IndusInd Bank and Coal India. While Coal India, a public sector undertaking, provided a timely and accurate response, the private sector giants remain silent. The recent surge in public sector stock prices is attributed to a combination of factors, including a renewed focus on customer centricity. This strategic shift has significantly contributed to their success. In contrast, the private sector appears to be lagging in prioritising customer needs. With an abundance of choices available to consumers, businesses that fail to prioritise customer satisfaction risk losing market share.
