🌏Together with IFAW @ifawglobal, we developed the "AI Guardian of Endangered Species" – the first-ever AI tool to fight online wildlife trafficking a few years ago. Elephants, tigers, and pangolins are just a few of the species that this tool is helping to protect. 🐘🐅🦔 Now, with version 2.0, the AI tool can identify wildlife products from 29 different species. Watch the video to see how we’re using AI to disrupt wildlife cybercrime and safeguard biodiversity. #BaiduAI #Baiducares

Rats pose a significant threat to New Zealand's unique wildlife. As invasive predators, they compete with native species for food and habitat, often leading to severe declines in bird populations, insects, and other small animals. Their impact is particularly devastating because New Zealand's native species evolved without mammalian predators and are highly vulnerable to rat predation. To combat this, we’ve developed the PredaCAM, a tool designed to detect rats in urban areas, enabling users to identify and control these pests more effectively. By providing real-time data, PredaCAM empowers communities to take immediate action to protect our precious wildlife. UNIFYING EFFORTS AGAINST WILDLIFE CRIMES Last week, PPNEA hosted a workshop on wildlife crimes in Albania which brought together many key stakeholders. Mrs. Almira Xhembulla, Vice Minister of Tourism and Environment, delivered a speech at the meeting, and to the representatives from local municipalities in Pogradec and Bilisht, the Prosecution of Korce, National Inspectorate for Territorial Protection (IKMT), and representatives from National and Regional Agencies of Protected Areas across Tirana, Shkoder, Kukes, Elbasan, Pogradec, Korce, Berat, Gjirokaster, and Fier. Attendees also included representatives from the National Hunting Federation and organizations specializing in wildlife rescue interventions. The workshop itself focused on raising awareness about the offenses being committed, with particular emphasis on rare and endangered mammal species like the Balkan lynx, Brown bear, and chamois, as well as the illicit killing and poisoning of birds. The objective was to underline the need to increase collaborations between institutions and build capacity in the identification and comprehension of the impacts of wildlife crimes. Discussions during the meeting delved into wildlife monitoring and the crucial role of data gathering in understanding the consequences of wildlife crimes. RAPA Elbasan, RAPA Korce, and PPNEA presented initiatives for species monitoring in protected areas and bio-corridors which have been made possible by PONT. These initiatives emphasize the importance of habitat connectivity and ecological corridors in sustaining wildlife and biodiversity. Recognizing wildlife crime as a significant environmental offense, the meeting stressed the importance of cooperation among relevant authorities and stakeholders, while also highlighting the need for public awareness and collective action.

We are thrilled to introduce the Wildlife CSI-Kit Design Competition, where students from universities worldwide will craft innovative prototypes for gathering evidence wildlife crime scenes. 🔍 Unlike traditional crime investigations asking "Who is it?", wildlife detectives are often challenged with the question "What is this?" From shark fins to bear bile, the range is vast! 🦈🌳 📊 While some identifications are visual, DNA analyses are often crucial, especially with fragmented evidence. By decoding mitochondrial DNA and using microsatellites, scientists create unique "DNA fingerprints" to link specimens to individuals. 🧬🔬 🌍 With wildlife crimes spanning borders, collaboration is key! By sharing expertise and databases, scientists aim to combat illegal trade and preserve our planet's biodiversity. 🤝🌎 Wildlife forensics plays a crucial role in prosecuting offenders and safeguarding endangered species.🦏 By designing comprehensive CSI kits, we empower first responders to collect vital evidence effectively, aiding in the prosecution of wildlife criminals and bolstering conservation efforts. 🦁💼 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/dUaaKf5d. #WildlifeForensics #WildlifeCSI #DNAInvestigation
