Fashion’s biggest night out happened last night in New York – the #MetGala. The dress code this year was “The Garden of Time” which brings to mind green and sustainability issues in relation to fashion and maybe the fact that we are running out of time to implement sustainable practices! Fashion brands are making very public targets to create a more sustainable industry, by 2030. However – this target and vision has great challenges. According to McKinsey, two-thirds of fashion brands are lagging in their own schedules of decarbonization, and a staggering 40 percent have seen their emissions increase since putting in place tangible targets. Greenhouse gas emissions emanating from the fashion industry is calculated to be 3 to 8 percent of total emissions. What are two key areas that should be considered by each fashion brand and what are the difficulties ?   - #SupplyChain: Understand the supply chain and the technical details, e.g. energy efficiency, emissions etc. Emissions analytics requires primary data from manufacturing facilities, requiring a high level of supply chain transparency (which may require information from manufacturing sub-contractors). Unlike some businesses which may have a tight supplier base, often fashion businesses may have a widespread (jurisdictionally) and diverse, supplier base. - Risk Framework: Implement an enterprise risk framework in the business which includes sustainability, putting sustainability front and centre. However, this requires a change in mindset and a roadmap to implement. However, the fashion industry has the huge benefit of a consumer base who are often very invested in the sustainability of the products and therefore sustainability efforts can significantly strengthen a fashion brand’s reputation and result in increased stakeholder value.   What EMG can do ? - We can develop a well-defined road map, which includes prioritised actions tailored for each business.  - Ensure that the right data is being monitored, collected and analysed.  - Help support the execution of the road map to ensure sustainability is embedded in the business.  #SustainableFashion #ESG
