At the end of the COP28 UN Climate Conference in Dubai, European Union negotiators succeeded, with partners from around the world, to keep alive the possibility of delivering on the commitment in the Paris Agreement to limit global average temperature increase to 1.5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels. With a particular focus on the energy sector in the talks, Parties agreed to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels this decade, to take action to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030, and set the world on a pathway to reaching net zero emissions by 2050, in line with the best available science. https://lnkd.in/eZFDw_VX #cop28 #eu #eugreendealAlessandro Cenderello Hervé de la Chapelle Jonas Groes Alexis Gazzo Julie Teigland Hanne Jesca Bax Alain Perroux Dominique Perron Loredana Vieil

#COP28 wrapped up today with a historical agreement of over 190 governments calling for the world to transition away from fossil fuels. The pact sends an unprecedented signal that nations worldwide are determined to cut back on coal, oil, and natural gas. This year's "global stocktake" is intended to calibrate guidelines to ensure we are on track to achieve Paris Agreement goals. More importantly, outcomes of this year's meetings are anticipated to accelerate private sector investment in clean energies, like solar and wind. As the rate of energy efficiency improvement doubles, the renewable energy capacity should triple by 2030. Read more on today's announcement here: https://ow.ly/rs1F50Qix3s

You could try to accuse any Middle Eastern country of bias when it comes to oil or gas policy, but it's simple science when you block out all the noise and media fearmongering. Plants need carbon. Our global standard of living is what it is because of fossil fuels including industrialization, urbanization, food production, technological advancement, and transportation. Electric vehicles/batteries/green energy require huge amounts of non-renewables to produce. Renewables simply could not sustain the load required to power our society. #COP28 https://lnkd.in/ggXfgrtu

Yesterday, COP28 considered energy and the transition away from fossil fuels 🌱 Since 1985, when we started importing low-carbon energy ⚡ from France 🇫🇷 , we virtually decarbonised our electricity system 💡. In the nearly 40 years since, our commitment to being the Island’s trusted energy ⚡ partner remains steadfast. Whether exploring future energy technologies, securing our energy independence through on-Island renewable solar ☀️ partnerships, or developing technology we can put in customers’ hands to help them save energy 💷, we're here as Jersey transitions to an all-electric future. #COP28 #ZeroCarbonFuture UN Climate Change

⬇️⬇️⬇️ “The Alliance of Small Island States, representing 39 countries, said it had not been in the room when the deal was adopted as it was still coordinating its response…. ➡️ Its lead negotiator, Anne Rasmussen from Samoa, did not formally object to the agreement and believed the deal had good elements, but said the “the process has failed us” and the text included a “litany of loopholes”. ➡️ We have made an incremental advancement over business as usual when what we really needed is an #exponential step change in our actions and support,” she said. Her speech was met with a standing ovation.” ➡️ Countries backed a call for global renewable energy to be tripled and the rate of #energyefficiency improvements doubled by 2030. A statement that global emissions should peak by 2025 was dropped. ➡️ (Hmmm) Little progress was made on #climateadaptation and #finance, which the deal acknowledges will need trillions of dollars in support. Mohamed Adow, from the thinktank Power Shift Africa, said the deal sent a strong signal, but agreed there were too many loopholes “on *unproven and expensive technologies* like #carboncapture and #storage, which fossil fuel interests will try and use to keep dirty energy on life support”. 🎯🎯🎯 #decarbonization #energytransition #cop28 ➡️ #momentum

The #COP28 deal is groundbreaking. For sure, a "transition away" from fossil fuels is not enough, but it's the best we could have hoped for under the COP consensus system. And more importantly, it sends a clear signal that the direction of travel for the world is towards an eventual phase out of #coal, #oil and #gas. Combine this with the goal to triple #renewables, double #energy #efficiency and tackle #methane #emissions by 2030, and we end up with plenty of momentum to justify taking bold actions and making strategic investments to speed up the #transformation.

The battle lines at COP28 are about the agreed language to phase out fossil fuels (and how much wriggle room will be provided with hand waving about CCS, or shifting the focus to more abstract ‘unabated emissions’). While agreement to “triple renewables” is positive, agreement to phase out fossil fuels is much more important. Fossil fuels are almost entirely and solely responsible for climate change. The world can’t win without fossil fuels ending. #energytransition
