The key to #skillsbasedhiring? Start at the bottom. Many organizations who want to implement skills-based talent programs don’t know where to start. So they start at the top. They hire and promote based on hard skills. Technical skills. Because that is all they know. They examine certificates, degrees and course completions to see if a person is qualified for the job. But it is a big mistake. And it leads to failure. + Unhappy employees = Poor customer service + Unhappy employees = Low engagement + Unhappy employees = high costs and low productivity Just because a person is good at Excel or has worked as a Project Manager: - Doesn’t mean they were actually good at it - Doesn’t mean they actually liked it You have to start at the bottom. You have to take inventory of a person’s capabilities, cognitive skills and interests: + Like critical thinking + Like writing That is the foundation for a solid skills-based talent program. Understand what they love, then build on that solid foundation: It is DURABLE. It doesn’t change much over time. It is TRANSFERRABLE. The capabilities transfer to other roles. Being a job seeker with no Linkedin profile is a bad move. Profiles with a picture receive 14X more views! The two reasons that candidates have given why they don't want a picture are: 1) I'm afraid it will decrease my chances of being considered due to my age 2) I don't have a good picture to use Some firms discriminate by age but it is not frequent outside of startup and silicon valley firms. Regardless of your age, keeping a professional image is important for most jobs. For instance, as a project manager you are often representing IT or the PMO- and the managers/directors of these groups have a career interest in hiring people who represent their organisation well. Hiring managers are going to see your age in the interview process, it is best to look at your greater experience as a strength rather than a weakness to be hidden.
