Reflecting on my experience managing a Slack Community of over 300 executives, one key regret stands out: Trying to impose rigid rules and regulations on Community standards. Why? Because the essence of vibrant communities lies in fostering genuine collaboration and interaction. When individuals feel empowered to express themselves authentically, it creates an environment ripe for innovation and growth. How could one feel comfortable sharing their own unique ideas or content, if there's someone discouraging them from sharing X because it doesn't fall under Y's categorical standards?! I've learned that the true strength of a Community lies in encouraging members to freely share their perspectives and insights. It's this diversity of thought that:   Enriches discussions. Drives creativity. and ultimately, Cultivates a stronger, more dynamic Community. Encourage members to share their thoughts and ideas, because that's what makes a community stronger. Not tight guidelines.

A successful community is more than just gathering members, it's about growing with them. The person that joins the community during the onboarding process should not be the same person one-year from now, and your community should scale with them as their expertise grows, and their needs and aspirations change. So how do you ensure that growth? One way is to design a "Community Growth Track" that maps out the user journey from day one to becoming a seasoned advocate. Incorporate checkpoints that not only signify their progress, but also reward it with exclusive access, badges or even feature beta tests. And don't forget to celebrate those milestones publicly in the community to inspire others. Your community members crave value and growth, and it's important to not miss out on the opportunity to support them, so don't just build a community and expect them to come. Build them an online community experience that they don't want to miss out on. --- #community #customerexperience

Hey On Deck alumni! On Deck's Slack channel is shutting down January 22. They've built a Community Portal to replace many of those functions. I dislike Slack as it's often too noisy and much value get's lost (not to mention expensive!), so I think this is the right move. We just found out that we're a certified Platinum community on Circle! 😱 (We didn't even know that was a thing!) Basically, Circle surveyed 600+ communities, analyzed their 10,000+ communities, conducted 1:1s and discovered that this is what makes up a top community: 🔶 A steady stream of content (posting frequently, hosting events, in-demand course content), 🔶 An intuitive onboarding process, 🔶 Meaningful member engagement, and more.
