But as Spain and France take to the pitch, one aspect we often overlook at tournaments is the seamless introduction of new technology by innovative football federations. One of the technological leaps made at #Euro2024 is the super-smart ball introduced to increase more accurate calling of offside decisions. The 'Fussballliebe' uses in-ball tech to transmit positioning data in real time to match officials. Anything that helps improve the efficiency of VAR is welcomed by all football fans. UEFA should be praised. The new tech can also be used to aid unclear handball decisions. The sensors in the ball can monitor human touch, though not specifically hand contact. In conjunction with targeted camera monitoring, the 'Fussballliebe will help match officials get the important close call handballs right. At this stage of a tournament, it's often won by fine margins. Less than 2 hours until the kickoff of EURO 2024! ⚽🏆 One thing that is different than in the previous 2 World Cup tournaments and the EURO 1988 hosted in Germany: This year, 4 out of the 10 stadiums hosting EURO 2024 matches are home to clubs from the second division (2. Bundesliga). A look back: In the 1974 World Cup, only Westfalenstadion in Dortmund hosted a 2. Bundesliga club. During EURO 1988, it was the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf. In the 2006 World Cup, the Zentralstadion in Leipzig was home to FC Sachsen Leipzig from the 4th division. Note that the division membership is determined at the beginning of the season. So Cologne (🐏) is not counted among the 2nd division venues in 2024. Funny enough, 1. Just a few days to go until the whistle blows for the first game of UEFA #Euro2024 so its time for another Dectech forecast! We've crunched the numbers and run the simulations, to pick the likely winners and losers in #Germany over the coming weeks... We think #Spain are (just) favourite to lift the trophy in Berlin on 14th July, marginally ahead of #England and #Portugal. Although the host nation should comfortably reach the last 16, the home advantage isn't enough to lift Germany above 6th in our ranking. Groups B and D are the most difficult to win, while Portugal have the easiest route to the knockout stages from Group F. The least likely team to progress beyond the group stage is #Albania. So how do our forecasts compare to the bookmakers? oddschecker is currently showing England as pre-tournament favourites, followed by #France and Germany, with Spain only 4th favourite and Portugal 5th. In other words, the betting markets are more bullish on Germany and France, and more bearish on Spain and Portugal. 🇩🇪 UEFA EURO 2024 switches to chipped ball for VAR offside decisions ⚽ 🖥 Kick Off - More Than Football believes this to be good news for the fans and the players. 😁 UEFA will introduce connected technology into the adidas FUSSBALLLIEBE ball ⚽ for Euro 2024 to improve the accuracy of semi-automated offside VAR decisions, as well as provide additional tracking data for players. The same technology was used by FIFA at the World Cup in the adidas Al Rihla ball, and it was able to conclusively prove that Cristiano Ronaldo did not make any contact for Portugal's 🇵🇹 opener in their 2-0 win over Uruguay 🇺🇾 . UEFA's semi-automated offside system being used in the Champions League does not have a chip inside the ball, meaning AI alone has to make up for any issues in accurately detecting the kick-point for offside. FUSSBALLLIEBE, which means "Football Love," will be used through the finals of the UEFA EURO 2024 in Germany. Semi-automated offside uses a series of cameras in the stadium roof to track all 22 players on the pitch and map their position, so the VAR does not need to manually create the offside lines. A sensor is in the centre of the Adidas ball, recording data 500 times a second to detect when the ball has been kicked. It is intended to be quicker, more accurate and provide a 3D visualisation of the decision. There were no controversial or major delays when the chipped ball was used at the last world cup. Congratulations to #Spain, worthy winners of UEFA #Euro2024 in last night's final in Berlin! While I was personally disappointed not to see an #England victory, that was another good result for our forecasting model. One month ago, before the tournament started, I posted Dectech's forecast and compared it to the betting market forecasts at that time. I asked "Will our data-driven approach beat the emotional, biased consensus of millions of football fans? Or will the wisdom of crowds triumph over a backward-looking, naive forecasting model?" I guess we have our answer! Across the 51 matches played, we picked the correct outcome for 27 of those games (53% vs 33% random guessing). The likelihood of that happening by chance is just 0.3%. The average probability we assigned to the actual outcomes was 41% (vs 33% random guessing), similar to our performance in World Cup 2022 and Euro 2020. #Dectech #football #prediction #Euro2024
